Plot[]

Matthew continued to cradle Noah's dead body, begging for him to wake up. Nancy approached and pleaded with Matthew to let go, telling him BISHOP would be there soon. However, the lab chief only insists he wants to face off against BISHOP himself. Nancy sighed, pleading with him that getting justice for Noah was the best way to face them. Nancy and the player's words helped snap Matthew out of his grief-stricken trance, as he reluctantly lets Noah go. A few hours later, Daphne concluded her autopsy and gravely sppoke to the pair, revealing Noah died of an internal haemorrhage from a blow to the abdominal. Matthew then asked the player to let him join the investigation, vowing to avenge Noah. With Matthew determined to get justice for Noah, they began the investigation. After Daphne told them she had felt an irregular shape inside Noah’s liver and would determine to discover more, they suspected Noah’s understudy Margot Valentine, businesswoman Lorelai, and First Lady Leila Stainton, who insisted the team focus their efforts on discovering the CHECKMATE traitor instead. As Matthew continued to grieve the loss of his boyfriend, a panicked Daphne ran in and screamed: BISHOP hid a bomb in Noah’s body.

Barbara led the bomb disposal team, as Daphne told Matthew BISHOP must've placed the bomb inside his body during his torture as insurance, causing Matthew to slam his fist on the table angrily. William traced the connection to a snow-ridden street, where they found elite agent Vivienne Demass holding a detonator. After a stand-off with Vivienne, the player arrested her. They then suspected Judge Nicolette Watson and Nancy's brother Giovanni Valentini, who returned to Easthaven after their father's breakout. Back in the headquarters, a tearful Matthew admitted he didn't know if he could go on without Noah, before Margot burst in. She shaked and clutched her wrist, confessing she killed Noah. Margot explained that, while she worked for Noah, she was hounded by his 'associates' for a meeting with him. Despite Margot insisting he was working from home, they continued to harass her until Margot told them his home address. After discovering Noah was kidnapped by BISHOP, Margot broke down in guilt with the belief she led him to his death.

Angered, Matthew started to shout at Margot, before Daphne takes her aside. They later discovered Noah wrote a scathing review of Lorelai's act years ago, leaving her job on the line, and that Giovanni had made a bid to buy the Easthaven Educator from him. The pair also learned Vivienne declared a hunt for Noah through the city, with kill-on-sight orders, and that Noah accidentally greenlit a slander piece against Nicolette. Finally, Leila was confronted after they discover she planned to force Noah into becoming an informant for her. Eventually, Matthew sighed and told the player it was time. Telling them he'd arrest Noah's killer even if it was the last thing he did, they found Lorelai responsible.

Lorelai sighed upon confrontation, telling them she dug her own grave and was ready to confess. She revealed that after Edgar barricaded Rusanov Square, her businesses were cut off and failing. Lorelai insisted she had worked too hard to claw her way up to success despite her physical affliction and refused to give it up, so she allowed BISHOP to use one of her warehouses to hold Noah in exchange for access to her businesses. However, when she was inspecting her warehouse, she found Noah trying to escape. The pair fought, before Lorelai hit him in the abdomen with her baseball bat. He was able to escape and call Matthew, before hiding in an alleyway, where he eventually passed away. A furious Matthew then handcuffed her, telling her that only the weak worked with BISHOP. They then present Lorelai to President Stainton, who assured them CHECKMATE would deal with her and suggests an eighteen-year sentence for the killer.

Outside the court, Mildred admitted her sorrow for Matthew, before her phone rang. She answered it, only to hear Matthew thank the team for being his friends. He told them he’d be okay, as he’d be with Noah, before ending the call.

They quickly raced to Matthew's home in Willow Grove and knocked on the door, but to no answer. Barbara wasted no more time and kicked in the door, prompting them to search for Matthew. Eventually, they found Matthew in his car in his garage, the ignition turned and the windows and doors locked. William and Mildred are eventually able to get the door open, before pulling Matthew out and hugging him. The Lab Chief, however, simply stated that he didn't know what to do with Noah - that he felt adrift with no anchor. Mildred then offered Matthew a place to stay, taking him back with her.

The next day, a quiet Matthew entered the station and admitted he'd come to a realization: Noah would want him to make BISHOP pay. Wanting to make things right with the other person in Noah's life, Matthew and the player approached Daphne about Margot. Daphne confessed Margot was likely mourning Noah in the square, prompting Matthew to head there. They talked for a while, before eventually hugging - forgiving each other. Margot then raised her fist and insisted Ilya Rusanov had helped her hire a private detective to investigate the new owner of the national newspaper Easthaven Educator, who was writing fake news articles to stir up tensions between Americans and Soviets.

Knowing their findings would be left in a post-box on the snowy street, they returned there, only to find the street defaced by anti-Soviet propaganda. Understanding they needed to work fast, they found the post-box and sent the findings to William. William then revealed a new fake article about Soviets being killed by American patriots in retaliation, scoffing that this wouldn't have happened if Grayson didn't let Jake free. He soon revealed his findings, confessing that he'd been able to find the original document used to permit the purchase... to Leila Stainton. William then pointed out her signature on the document, as Grayson ordered the team to the Presidential lake house immediately.

As they arrived, they found no trace of Leila, her belongings packed into bags. Realizing the CHECKMATE traitor had slipped through their grasp, they confronted Arthur, who insisted he had no idea about Leila's involvement. Grayson soon ordered a city-wide manhunt for Leila, vowing to find and imprison her before the world broke into all-out war. Hours later, Nancy revealed riots in Moscow and D.C., with both sides protesting for a war against the other. Velma and Vinnie then approached and admitted that recent events, like Vinnie's assassination attempt and Noah's death, had made them realize they were in a war against the Chessmaster, and that more of them would die. They then revealed they wished to marry before that could happen, so that, if they died, they would be together.
