—Case Teaser

Unholy Night is a case featured in Criminal Case, it appears as the third case in the miniseries Mad House and the third case overall.

Plot

1889. One of the patients hurriedly draws on his room's wall in a panic, sweating profusely and wringing his wrists. A caring Sylvie Havisham then stops him, asking how she could help with the drawings. The two finish the sketch, and after Sylvie compliments it, she asks the patient to stop refusing treatment. She's here to help.

Present day. The asylum's doors are locked and bolted, the curtains drawn and the windows shut. A dark chill descended over the institution as possessed girl Ella Creek is wheeled along a hallway and into a darkened room. After Wilhelm Drake's exorcism goes awry, Sister Jane called for an interval. They leave the room and when they come back an hour later, Ella's dead body is strapped down on the bed, her heart brutally cut from her chest. They first speak to Wilhelm, who was saddened he couldn't save her. He revealed Ella was a bright and lively girl, and that she'd be sorely missed. They then questioned Sister Jane and fellow patient, former bomb disposal technician Nevin Rodgers, who calmly explained that he wasn't scared of any 'dark spirits', as he was a loyal soldier of the black market. Afterwards, as Celine told the others that Valeria was missing, a woman approached them, claiming to be Katrina Macerno.

Due to the woman's insistence she was Katrina, they spoke to Marie Bishop, who revealed the woman was infatuated with the Macerno family, to the point she believed she was Katrina. Later, after questioning Katrina, they spoke to asylum therapist Elijah Roa. After discovering Wilhelm and Jane conspired to kill Ella if the exorcism didn't work, they then discovered Nevin was communicating with the other patients to stage a breakout during the night. They also discovered Elijah wanted to study Ella's situation for his thesis, before calming Katrina, who wanted to escape to visit her "brother" Silvano. Finally, at the stroke of midnight, they found Wilhelm guilty.

They soon confronted the murderous priest, where he tried to deny the accusations, before Caspian revealed they were the Grimoire Formation: supernatural hunters. A shocked Wilhelm then insisted he'd been lying, revealing Ella was a paid actress, not a possessed youth. Confused, Caspian demanded Wilhelm explain, prompting him to confess that he needed to get inside the asylum walls. Therefore, he paid Ella to pretend to be possessed, knowing the asylum offered exorcisms. They put the plan in motion but during the act, Ella began to grow wary of Edgewater, pleading to leave as she felt a dark presence. As Ella refused to go along with the act, Wilhelm snapped, using a crucifix dagger to cut her heart out. Hoping everyone would be distracted with the murder, Wilhelm then set his next plan in motion. When asked what he wanted inside the asylum, Wilhelm refused to say. For the murder, the team placed Wilhelm in one of their RVs until they discovered the truth.

At Chief Rove's request, they returned to the storage room to find more information on Wilhelm. After unlocking Wilhelm's bag, they discovered years-worth of files on the asylum, including a map of the location with the gardens circled. They then confronted Wilhelm once more, who eventually confessed that, due to a mass murder on the land which the asylum was built upon, the soil was sacred. To demonstrate his point, they took Wilhelm to the gardens where he killed a mouse, much to Aurora Putnam's anger. Wilhelm then buried the mouse in the soil and minutes later, it rose once more, its wounds nothing but scars. Wilhelm revealed the sacred soil had the power of resurrection and that he needed to get to it, no matter the cost. Realizing Fiona Vaughn must've been resurrected using the same soil, they rushed to her room, only to find the door open and her cell empty. The Angel had escaped.

Meanwhile, Morgana revealed Katrina had requested to speak to them. Katrina then insisted she'd seen a woman crawling in the woods, prompting them to rush there. Eventually, they found a woman, her legs sewn together. Realizing she was the "mermaid woman" from the notes, they brought her back to the RV, where she eventually thanked them. The panicked woman revealed she was a patient under the name of Brianna Hart before she was kidnapped, strapped down to a bed and experimented on. After her "surgery", she was chained in an outhouse for further study, only escaping barely. When asked who the sadistic surgeon was, Brianna insisted she didn't know, but revealed they were planning their next operation: using Octavian Porter's spine to create the "hunchback woman".

Back at the RVs, the team recapped the events: a surgeon was performing experiments on the patients, adding and amputating body parts to create their own "perfect creations". Cyrus then approached them, telling them the woman on the "hunchback woman" drawing looked identical to Valeria. Believing the surgeon was preparing to operate on Valeria next, they hurried into the woods and to the outhouse.

December 2019. A quiet cemetery in Rusthollow is covered in fog, as a shadowed figure shovels away at the dirt atop Fiona Vaughn's dishevelled and vandalised grave. They lift the coffin, removing Fiona's body and cradling her carefully. After arranging transport across the sea, they smuggle her to the asylum, where they gently lower her into the sacred soil. A few minutes later, the dirt begins to move... and a confused Fiona rises from the ashes.
