To Pay A Deadly Price is a case featured in Criminal Case as the second case of Toomeswood and the second case overall. It is also the second case in the Perleyville Community district of Toomeswood
Plot[]
Vanessa and the player were sent by Chief Bellacoola to inspect Perleyville Community Secondary School to ensure that no trouble was happening in the community, much to the annoyance of the Senior Detective who wanted to go motorbiking instead. Lab Chief Lucas Langley-Merritt(who was trying to restrain his pet wolf dog) reported a murder in the boys' locker room, where the three found jock Caleb Millhouse gutted and dismembered, which further annoyed Vanessa. As Tazia was still in custody for disorderly conduct, Lucas was needed to perform the autopsy in her place, further infuriating the senior detective.
Mid-investigation, a black-out was accidentally caused by vlogger Brad Ryder who tracked down the team using a GPS, a feat which infuriated Vanessa, Jonah and science teacher Jack Princeton.However, home economics teacher Brenda Reynolds managed to calm the three down by having them hear out the vlogger who had come to the team with allegations about the victim.
Later on in the investigation, Brenda reported a physical altercation ensued between coach Brock Rothery and Jack which was ended by principalGerald Deckerton who without allowing Jack to explain his side of the story, automatically decided that the coach was in the right which infuriated both Brenda and Jack. After gathering enough evidence, the team managed to arrest Brock for the murder.
Brock furiously claimed innocence til Vanessa managed to get him to slip up and admit to throwing a meat slicer at the victim. He confessed to forcing the football players to go on a strictly protein only diet which made several of the boys sick. When one of the boys decided to switch to a ketogenic diet, that infuriated the coach to the point where he barged into the boys locker room with the meat slicer miraculously working despite the cord being broken. When Brock threw the meat slicer, the boys ran out of the locker room to escape the coach's wrath. Caleb, however was left at the mercy of the coach but put up a losing battle before being slaughtered by the meat slicer.Vanessa didn't hesitate to ship her former gym teacher to trial where an infuriated Judge Whiterock didn't even try to listen to a word the coach said after he tried to justify his actions before she sentenced him to life imprisonment without parole for both the murder and his abusive behavior towards his students, ending his 25 year tenure at the high school. Brock furiously declared that Vanessa would rue the day she arrested him and threatened that her days were numbered before she snapped back saying she would be ready for whatever he'd try to throw at her.
After the trial, Jordan and the player went to check up on Jack who needed help with further investigations on Brock, while trying to stay clear of Principal Deckerton. After finding only a single incident report in the boys locker room, Jordan and the player went with Jack to seek Brad's help to confront the disgraced coach once and for all. The four confronted Brock, who furiously justified his abusive behavior throughout his 25 year tenure at the school by stating that the boys managed to have successful careers under his tough teachings and bragged that Jack would lose his career after notifying Principal Deckerton of the interrogation. After finding out about Jack's investigation on the ex-coach, Deckerton confronted the science teacher and reprimanded him despite proof of Brock's abuse of power. However, Jordan backed up Jack by stating that Brock would be reported to the school board and warned Deckerton of the consequences of any further sweeping any breeches under the rug.
Meanwhile, profiler Jane Fernie accompanied the player after receiving a report from the school psychologist about Brenda in possible mental distress.The team found an empty blister packet in the school cafeteria which (per Lucas) was confirmed to be the home ec.teacher's anti-depressants. Jane and the player then went to check up on Brenda to make sure she hadn't overdosed on her anti-depressants after the victim and his mother blackmailed her about being bisexual. She explained that she had been distressed amid possible rumours of Elanna Esposito (who she felt was like a daughter to her) possibly being forced by her mother to emigrate back to Tijuana. However, much to Brenda's heartbreak, the rumors were confirmed to be true per a goodbye note the team found at the school's sauna room. Jane gently suggested a group therapy center for her as well as a local garden to help her cope with the void of losing Elanna.
Afterwards, the team was alerted by Father Novello Cappelanio about a physical altercation between the divorced Esposito couple.
