—Case Teaser

The Start of Something Great is a case featured in Criminal Case where it appears as the fiftieth case in Sinner's Enigma. It takes place as the first case in the Ashened Abyss district of Evergrace.

With ENIGMA out there threatening the city along with the insurgent Resistance leader Isabel Lannuzzi, Cameron and the player were assigned by Chief Sinnett to patrol the city wall, which had been fully built around the city. They then discovered the corpse of stockbroker Willy Shropshire, impaled to the wall with a knight's lance. Soon after, Jason and Camilla quickly confirmed the lance as the murder weapon. They then suspected prison warden and head of security Inspector Cortez, crooner Alistair Borghese and much to Cameron's shock, his brother and political assistant Kevin McLachlan. After Cameron expressed his worry due to Kevin being suspected, they were informed of someone being in the victim's home.

They then investigated the victim's home and discovered papers on the Resistance before they found out that clumsy chimney sweep Paul Turner had fallen into the house again while sweeping the chimney. They then suspected Paul in the murder, before suspecting courthouse architect Jane Nelson in the homicide. They then discovered that Inspector Cortez was interrogating the victim about his connections and that the victim tried to get Kevin fired from his position in assisting Jay Monaco. Soon after, they were informed of a riot by the resistance wall. The team approached the rioters who were ordering for Isabel's head or they start bombing the wall. Cameron, with his suave and gregarious charisma, calmed the rioters and lied to them and said that they will eventually get Isabel's head at night and told them that they didn’t need anymore riots, in order to prevent the Resistance’s suspicions. They continued investigating, discovering that Jane was mass producing counterfeit bills with the victim in hopes of tricking the Resistance, before gathering enough evidence to arrest Alistair Borghese for the crime.

They confronted the crooner about the homicide and the singer denied the murder. However, Alistair soon confessed to the crime when Cameron demanded the truth from him due to Alistair’s death ballads that he had written and the crooner told them that he had discovered the victim’s counterfeit money-making operation and truly believed that the victim was trying to sabotage the mayor’s innocence and standing so the villains in the city could win. He then told them that he attempted to steal money from the victim so he could give the counterfeit money to the police, but was caught by Willy, who chased him out of his house. Alistair then panicked, afraid that the victim might report him for the robbery and the entire counterfeiting operation on him. He then tried to lure the victim to the city wall to make an agreement, however Willy attacked Alistair after they met up, which forced the crooner to fight back as he saw the lance that the victim had on his belt. He then grabbed the fencing lance and punctured the victim to the wall in a mere moment that ended a life. Alistair then sobbed as he then allowed the detectives to arrest him, before Judge Umbright sentenced Alistair to life in prison for robbery and premeditated murder. Afterwards, the team swore to uncover the Resistance’s plans.

After the trial, Cameron and the player were informed by Colette that Jay had been missing for hours and that she feared the worst for the Mayor due to recent events. They then decided to head to the city hall per Colette's mention of the Mayor's daily walk along the wall, soon finding the Mayor's tie covered in a black dust. After they learned from Seamus Kaylock (who was still getting over his sister's betrayal) that the dust was soot, they then questioned Paul, who told them that he saw the mayor getting attacked by a group of attackers wearing black. They then returned to the city wall and discovered some torn pieces that they were able to restore to find a message written to the team, telling them that ENIGMA had kidnapped the mayor. The message also warned the team to not search for Isabel Lannuzzi, or they would not hesitate to hurt those close to the team. Dazed, Cameron and the player then returned to the precinct to figure out more ideas.

Meanwhile, Katelyn and the player decided to talk to Kevin about uncovering ENIGMA and the Resistance's plans, so they could stop the criminal organization and their helpers before it was too late. Kevin then told them that he wasn't sure on what Isabel was up to, but he suggested to the detectives that they investigate Willy's notes on the Resistance. The player and Katelyn then headed to the Shropshire household and discovered a hidden locked box in the victim's house. They then unlocked the box and discovered a stack of Resistance files, which they sent to Skylar, who confirmed that the files was on the Resistance. She revealed that the files detailed Isabel's infiltration into the Mayor's trust. However, she then showed them a photo of Judge Umbright talking to Isabel like old friends. Suspecting that the Judge was allied with the Resistance in secret, Katelyn and Skylar then headed to share their findings with the Chief.

After all the events, the Chief and the trio of detectives deduced that the Mayor was most likely let off by the Judge due to the Resistance's plans to kidnap him and remove him from ENIGMA's path to victory. Soon after, Colette came to the station to introduce the team to Ravenedge born lawyer and judge Constantin Lorelle, who promised to help the team with trials as an interim judge if they caught Elisa for her crimes in allying with the Resistance. With the team and ENIGMA building up their allies, the Chief then confidently told the player that they would take down ENIGMA, once and for all.
