Storm in a Teacup is a case featured in Criminal Case as the tenth case of the game. It is the fourth case set in the Ringwald Cemetery district of Shadowcrest.

Plot[]

Previously on Criminal Case, Imogen had discovered that the elusive Layla had interviewed a Tillie Prescott various times for information regarding the history of Shadowcrest. Imogen was able to pinpoint Tillie's current residence as the Dawnwood Grove retirement home, which Julian and the player opted to visit.

As Julian and the player were taking a scenic scroll to the retirement home, they were interrupted by a caretaker from the retirement home, Felix Chamberlain, who announced that he had found an old woman in her room, dead due to unnatural circumstances. Julian and the player's findings were that a Sharon Rutherford had sulfuric acid thrown in her face from her signature teacup.

During the investigation, there were various new leads and deterrents. Early on in the investigation, Dean revealed that his grandmother, Madeline Warner, resided at the same retirement center as the victim. As such, Madeline had to be placed as a suspect for the time being. Additionally, Julian and the player finally met Tillie Prescott, only to learn that she had dementia and does not remember much of anything about Layla or the victim. After that, Dean also tried to take his grandmother out of the retirement home for her safety, but Julian and the player convinced him otherwise. In the end, Felix was exposed as the murderer.

Felix feigned umbrage at the accusation ab initio, but relented as he realized he had been caught. He revealed that he was actually the victim's grandson (and, by extension, Cassie Cummies' older brother). When he was 12 years old, their parents had died in a car crash, leaving the victim as their next of kin. However, Sharon was not financially secure enough to adopt both children, resulting in Felix being sent to a foster home. Felix felt that the final years of his adolescence were destroyed due to his forced separation from his family, and spent years fantasizing his revenge on his grandmother. A few months prior, when he learned about a job opening at the Dawnwood Grove retirement home, he immediately took the opportunity knowing that his grandmother lived there. Felix had finally gained the courage to orchestrate the murder that very day and sloshed acid onto Sharon's face, admitting that he had expected to get away with the crime had Julian and the player come to investigate that day. Julian pointed out that the player would never let a murderer slip loose from their grasp, and then shipped Felix off to court.

While Judge Fierro had sympathy for Felix's childhood trauma, they noted that there were more pacifistic solutions, such as visiting a therapist or confronting the victim about his sentiments in a non-violent manner. After a bit of back-and-forth, Felix admitted that he felt momentarily sadness due to killing his grandmother, effectively having further isolated himself from his family. As such, Judge Fierro sentenced Felix to 25 years in prison with mandatory psychological counseling.

Following Felix's incarceration, the chief's daughter, Penny Cromwell, came to the station in hopes of talking to an officer. She admitted that her father had been rather despondent in the wake of his mentor's betrayal and was burying himself in his work instead. Penny's attempts to convince her father to take a break fell on deaf ears and she hoped that his colleagues could convince him otherwise. After finding, Kristen and the player convinced Chief Cromwell to go on a camping trip to Tahoe with his daughter. He admitted that he had felt rather disconsolate over the rupturing of his childhood but agreed that it was only fair to his family to spend more time with them again. Kristen was worried for the chief and said that it wasn't fair for him to shut himself off from social connection; Chief Cromwell agreed and went to go pack his bags. However, before he left for Tahoe, Chief Cromwell cryptically mentioned that he had a few secrets that he wasn't sure he could tell the team yet. Kristen was understanding and told him that he was entitled to his privacy. Once he left the station, Trina admitted that she had "accidentally overheard" snippets of the conversation, but hoped that the chief would be alright in the coming days. Kristen was in concordance with Trina but feared that there could more secrets that would come to light.

Additionally, socialite Rhoda Meadow-Brook (who had been a suspect before) also had to speak with the police. She said that, in order to maintain an altruistic image, she would volunteer at Dawnwood Grove and spend time with the residents. Rhoda wanted to report that Tillie had been acting rather erratically during her visit, mentioning some rather random names. In hopes of learning more information, Julian and the player helped Tillie find her medication, but he noted that she was acting rather suspicious. Upon finding her diary, the investigators sent it to Imogen, who was shocked to reveal that Tillie's dementia was a ruse. Julian and the player immediately confronted an apologetic Tillie, who admitted that she feared that there were some people after her. When Julian asked who it was, Tillie refused to speak, saying that they had kidnapped a friend of hers 22 years ago at the Solar Eclipse Festival. Until the team could successfully capture them, Tillie wanted to feign that she had forgotten everything and hide in utmost privacy. Before she could shoo the police duo away, Julian asked if she knew who "Layla" was: Tillie told them that they would learn in due time.

As Chief Cromwell bid the team adieu for the week, Julian, Kristen, and the player made plans to attend the upcoming solar eclipse festival in hopes of delving more into the truth.
