—Case Teaser

Slain by the Bell is a case featured in Criminal Case, appearing as the third case in City of Angels and the third case overall. It takes place as the third case in the Dawn district of Los Angeles.

Plot

Previously, the team discovered Lucia made weekly outgoing calls to (213) 239-9099 at the Korean Bell of Friendship in San Pedro, the team theorizing it was a drop-off site. Emillia quickly decided to rush to the bell come morning light and the pair sped away in a patrol car. At the site, Emilia tried to distract herself by reading up on the bell's history, commenting on the bell's beauty. As the pair walked around and inspected the area, they noticed a blood spray leading to the bell. Upon closer inspection, tourist Mi Seong-Ja was laid out of the steps, bleeding from her head. Kev ascertained that Seong-Ja's killer pushed her against the bell; the collision cracking her skull. After Natalie confirmed the killer spoke Korean due a note stuffed down her airway, they questioned politics student Noah Argent, who claimed Seong-Ja asked him to, through his university friends, secure invitations to the Delux nightclub, where they suspected bouncer Madelyn Smith and casting agent Uzoma Ejiofor. Back at the precinct, Natalie, rather bluntly, tried to analyze Emilia's emotional state to her face, causing Emilia to slam her back. Before Natalie could respond, a frantic woman ran in, claiming to know who killed Mi.

She revealed her name as Holly Atkins, a delivery driver for the nearby Golden Pagoda restaurant and takeaway. Sighing, she recounted that Mi had been hassling the restaurant every night that week, scaring away customers and causing restaurant owner Somun Hyun-Seok to confront her. However, she never saw her after Somun went to find her. Somun calmly smoked his cigar and explained that Mi was a troublesome girl accusing them of giving her food poisoning but a dissatisfied customer was hardly a matter to murder over. After speaking to restaurant chef Tokko, who could barely utter a word due to her anxiety, they discovered Mi had led Noah on to get into the Delux nightclub, promising it was for a good reason, and that Uzoma had attempted to enlist Mi, but she found his employment conditions startlingly controlling. Back at the precinct, Zoe walked in carrying a box of Mi's possessions. She admitted Mi had reminded her a lot of her grandson and so she wanted to help solve her murder. Just then, Emilia found a photograph of Mi and Tokko on a rock, hugging each other.

The trio looked at the photo closely, before Madelyn entered the station and requested the player's presence quickly. In an interrogation room, Madelyn tapped her fingers on the desk and explained that outside of being a bouncer, she had other... services, so naturally Mi hired her. She recounted how Mi needed help investigating Golden Pagoda and helping her sister, Tokko, escape, revealing Tokko gave Somun all her money so Somun could start a new life for her in the states, only to force her to work for him with no pay. However, when Madelyn came up with some... creative suggestions, Mi fired her disapprovingly. This prompted them to question Somun and Tokko, claiming they had no evidence and being too afraid to speak respectively. Meanwhile, records showed Holly had also been hired and trapped by Somun. Ultimately, she was the killer.

Holly placed her hand on her hip and screwed her eyebrows as they confronted her. She madly waved her arms and told them that she didn't appreciate their false accusations, reminding them that she gave them the lead into Somun and suggested they arrest him instead. However, Emilia eventually coerced Holly into confessing. The delivery driver quickly slammed her fist onto the table and explained that she didn't want to murder Mi, but the ends justified the means. She recounted how, while growing up in the Caribbean, she had always wanted a life in the states. When she heard that Somun could arrange the immigration, she leapt at the chance and gave him all her money. However, when she arrived, Somun, like he had done to Tokko and many others, forced her to work for him with no pay, leaving her trapped. Everything she did to stop Somun failed - until Mi arrived. The night before the murder, Holly begged Mi to help her take down Somun, though Mi made it clear that she was only interested in getting Tokko out and that she was too afraid to take Somun on. Refusing to let her one chance of freedom go to waste, Holly plotted Somun's downfall. First, she followed Mi to the bell and smashed her head against it. Next, she feigned innocence and incriminated Somun, hoping the team would do the rest. With nothing left to say, she was handcuffed and taken away.

In court, Holly pleaded innocence to Judge Bross and claimed that she was a victim of circumstances. However, William arched his eyebrow and told her that no matter her circumstances, vigilantism was wrong and that Mi was the real victim - alongside him, as his paint had expired. With that said, he sentenced Holly to twenty years in prison and requested the team shut down Somun's business once and for all.

Back in the bullpen, Zoe quickly asked the player to meet her in her lab. She angrily stated that she didn't want Mi to die for nothing; wanting to honour her legacy by rescuing the workers from Somun's clutches. Agreeing that Madelyn was their only lead, they headed to Deluxe and met the bouncer by the waiting line. Though Madelyn initially refused to pass over the drive containing her findings - insisting she was loyal to her clients-, Zoe successfully intimidated her into it, telling the shocked player that she'd picked up a thing or two in her years. Per Alyssa, the drive stored photos of Somun's workers bloody and bruised, gravely confirming Somun was both financially and physically abusive. However, with no confirmation that Somun inflicted the wounds, they were stuck. Then, Madelyn walked in. She apologized for her prior aloofness and stated that she'd successfully built a reputation she didn't want to be sullied by working with the team. However, Tokko, Holly, and the other workers deserved her to finish the job Mi had paid her for. The trio then formulated a plan; Madelyn confronted Somun behind the Golden Pagoda and leered him into attacking her. Madelyn then defended herself against the blows as Zoe, who was recording the event, arrested him. This gave them clearance to search the Golden Pagoda top to bottom, finding proof of Somun's exploitation. Tokko then thanked the trio for helping her and hoped that she'd be able to finally start a life in Los Angeles, before departing by the next bus.

Meanwhile, Emilia paced the bullpen as she meticulously analysed the notes on Ennis' murder, before asking the player to come with her to the Bell of Friendship. Disguised and watching from a nearby bench, they waited for Lucia to approach the bell as scheduled. Eventually, she did so, taping a package to the underside of the bell. No minutes later, the pair rushed to intercept Lucia and her contact's drop-off, opening the package to find a large collection of printed documents. These documents confirmed Imperatives, a professional crime scene cleaning company founded by Meadow Cabrera, were hired to clean the site of Ennis' murder. Confused, they agreed to question Meadow. Meadow recounted the events that transpired: at 2AM, she was called to clean the scene which she did as she usually did. Suddenly, Emilia remembered that the murder was reported at 3AM, an hour after Meadow cleaned the scene. When they asked Meadow who hired her, she explained that he had a gruff, harsh voice, but a genteel manner, which matched Sergio Alcocer.

With all said and done, Emilia furiously asked to go confront Sergio herself, but Natalie bluntly informed her that the illogical actions of a grief-stricken imbecile would expose their discoveries. Eventually, after Emilia calmed herself, they recapped: Sergio Alcocer had covered up the murder of Ennis Holt before his assistant, Sheila reported it. Years later, Lucia and her unknown contact begin reinvestigating the murder. Agreeing that they needed answers once and for all, the team decided to confront Lucia about her involvement at the Elysian Park.
