—Case Teaser

Shrinking Violet is a case featured in Criminal Case, it appears as the thirty-ninth case in A World Forgotten and the two hundred and twenty-eighth overall. It takes place as the third case in the Serene Creek district of Ravenedge.

Plot

Following the arrest of Francesca Osborne, a semblance of peace rolled over Serene Creek and Ravenedge. Tobias then suggested they hike to Phoenix Falls to watch Aimee paint to celebrate. Isabella then joined the player along the trail, though she spotted a badger peeking out of the fauna and decided to follow it. However, the badger then led the pair to a body laid in the woods, her eyes closed and violets sticking out of her mouth. Moira identified the body as university student Violet Cawley, a gifted youth hailing from Slipknot's Way. She confirmed Violet was suffocated before being carried to the woods and having violets placed in her mouth post-mortem. First speaking to Aimee about what she had seen while painting, she admitted she hadn't seen anything that could help their investigation. They then questioned university dean Milo Fitget and her dormmate Leonora Weston. Back in the foyer, Isabella talked about how she saw herself within Violet - a young woman with big dreams - and admitted her sorrow that Violet hadn't been able to manifest them, just days before Christmas too. Then, Sienna wheeled herself into the precinct carrying a newspaper; the headline stating Violet was an opium addict.

Sienna explained that an anonymous source contacted the Ravenedge Gazette to tell them about Violet's opium addiction, which took up every free moment she spent outside of studying. They soon spoke to opium lounge owner Sue Li, though she stated with a flick of her fan that she barred Violet when she saw her spiralling and suggested she sourced the opium elsewhere. They also questioned choir leader Margot Cordelli after discovering she dealt the opium in exchange for test answers. The team soon learnt the extent of Violet's struggles within the university which led to her addiction, with Leonora even drugging her so she'd be able to relax. Aimee also explained that Violet asked to work underneath her but afraid of her wasting her intelligence, she refused and told her to go back to the university. Hope then ran down the stairs with a stack of papers, shouting that she knew who informed the papers of Violet's murder and struggles.

Hope reported that she'd found records of Milo visiting the gazette, prompting them to confront the dean. He insisted he never meant to slander Violet and that he loved her academic acumen, that he was proud of her for clawing her way out of Slipknot's Way and hoped she'd only be the first. However, he knew how much she struggled, so following her death, he leaked her addiction so he could expose how students needed more support. Not sure whether to buy his story or not, Isabella nodded, before discovering Margot and Violet were pursuing a romantic relationship. Margot then laughed, telling them it was the twentieth century and they shouldn't be so surprised. Sue also attempted to use her protective services for Violet, though she angrily refused. Finally, the killer was Leonora.

Leonora clutched her chest and insisted she'd never kill her dormmate and best friend; sobbing that they were like sisters and helped each other through everything. When Isabella countered with the damning evidence and asked Leonora how she could put Violet through such pain, Leonora snapped, stating she did everything to help Violet and had taken away her suffering. She began to explain how she couldn't bare to see Violet working herself into exhaustion yet refusing to sleep out of fear of falling behind, so she began drugging her drinks with sleep medication to ease her pain. However, as Leonora did so, she began to feel that the only way Violet could feel peace was when she was asleep; that when she was awake, she was battling her addiction, her mind and the expectations set on her. Wanting 'peace' for Violet and inspired by the poem "God Saw You", Leonora did what she felt was fair. She drugged Violet and waited until she fell into a deep sleep, before suffocating her with a pillow. She then carried Violet to a hidden hideout in the woods and gave her violets, due to the belief that violets helped ward off evil spirits on the passage to the afterlife.

In court, Leonora cried that Violet's only way of peace was through death, that only she knew what Violet was going for and what was right, prompting Judge Haddid to sigh. She agreed that students faced harsh expectations, a feeling she too had felt during law school, but that it was no excuse for murder. Additionally, she commented that by deflecting her own feelings onto Violet, she had robbed her of a life of opportunities and many citizens of a person to look up to. She was then sentenced to fifteen years imprisonment with mandatory counselling sessions.

---Rain Must Fall (3/6)---

Post-trial, Amethyst declared that thanks to the successful investigation, it was high-time they watch Aimee finish her painting. However, on the hiking trail, they heard Aimee shouting for help and letting out cries of pain. They rushed over to her and Amethyst quickly checked on her sister, discovering a large gash on her forehead. She wearily explained that she was walking back to town after completing her painting, only to be attacked by a hooded assailant who threw a rock at her head and stole the painting. With Aimee escorted to Moira, the pair found the rock and fingerprints belonging to mayoral supporter Eustace Kipling. Upon confrontation, Eustace promised that he never touched a hair on Aimee's head and whistled that he may have picked up the rock at any earlier date. He then declared that Aimee's painting wouldn't unite Ravenedge and that too much blood had been spilled by the movement to led them go unpunished. An angered Amethyst was forced to let him leave but a tip-off from Gabriel Rose led them to find the painting, thankfully undamaged. Aimee then signed her name at the bottom; undeterred.

Meanwhile, Charity approached the player and admitted that although she never asked any personal favours from them, she needed their help. She described how the Mayor had been boring down on her to arrest the movement supporters with expedience and despite her best efforts to dissuade him, he was too stubborn. Needing a distraction from her difficult situation, she asked she help Sienna's return to the team. Speaking to Antonio, he exclaimed that Sienna had been wanting a new brooch from Sue's jewellers and, despite Charity not understanding its practicality, insisted it'd raise her spirits. Following the lead, they ultimately repurchased the brooch from Margot after she bought the last one and gifted it to Sienna as an early Christmas present.

Back at the foyer, the team witnessed another argument between Charity and Hugo about the rising movement support. Hugo then demanded Charity act upon her oath and arrest 'those scoundrels', before more innocent citizens were forced into actions to protect themselves. He then stormed away, leaving Charity with her head in her hands. The team then agreed that Aimee's painting had exasperated both sides and decided to attend her Christmas unveiling of the painting in hopes of protecting her.

Years ago, Hugo lifted Cornelius up onto the rocks and watched him climb, only for him to slip and fall on his knee. The junior politician quickly cradled his son and brushed his knee; Cornelius looking up as he started to cry. Hugo told him the pain was only momentary and asked he pull himself together, but Cornelius confessed he was worried about losing his father; that Hugo had been fading away into his work and ambitions. Hugo bandaged his knee and smiled, saying that - one day - the Osborne name would mean greatness, that he and Cornelius would stand together in Ravenedge's cathedral and they would make their ancestors proud.
