One Soul Away is the first case of Criminal Case: American Edition (Season 1) and appears as the first case overall. It takes place in the Chale Hills district of New York City.

Plot

The player just arrived at the American Police Department where the Chief of Police, Andrea Goff, delightfully welcomed the player to her team. She introduced Detective Adison Paulson who was assigned to be the player's partners in America. Andrea decided to inform the player about a series of crimes plaguing America prior to the player's arrival. She also explained that these crimes were commited by the criminal organization FEAR, who's planning to control America under their power. Unexpectedly, the group discovers Sarah Harnes who told them that she and her boyfriend, Dylan Smith, had been shot. Andrea orders Adison and the player to head to the docks.

During the investigation, the two found Dylan's body shot with a gun. They also found evidence in the crime scene, which were a torn paper and the victim's tie. Later on, the player restored the torn paper, which revealed that scientist Franco Gutierrez wrote it against the victim. The two interrogate Franco who told them that Dylan was an ungrateful person.

Afterwards, the player examined the victim's tie and found fingerprints that belong to Louis Gervi, which was Dylan's bodyguard. He admitted that during the crime, Louis intended to save the victim by pulling him out of the car with his tie, but before he could do it, Dylan was shot in the forehead. Louis had nothing to do but escape the crime scene.

Adison and the player went back to headquarters after Chief Andrea reported the killer running off to the Botanical Gardens. The two headed there to find more evidences, a phone and a pregnancy test. After the examination of the victim's phone, the two found out that the last call Dylan received was from Ryan West, and he called the victim a few minutes before the murder. When he was interrogated, Ryan called the victim because he discovered that Dylan was responsible for the deaths of his family. After the interrogation, the two decided to send the pregnancy test they collected to Colin Richards. He analyzed the urine on it which matches the ones with Sarah. From the test's display, Colin confirmed that Sarah was pregnant. When she was interrogated, she said that Dylan became furious after she discovered her pregnancy test. She told the duo that Dylan only cared about was the abandoned castle near the woods. The two decided to proceed to the castle and found a set of evidences.

In the castle, they found a bag with the initials "D.S." which stands for "Dylan Smith". They also found some skin cells tucked on the bag which gave them a clue that the killer has blue eyes. Under it are letters spelled as FEAR. Adison speculated that Dylan could've been a member of FEAR, thus she reported this to Chief Andrea. Frederick Moran, the coroner of APD, confirmed that the gun was the murder weapon. He also told the two that he found traces of milk, eggs, cheese and flour in the gun. The victim's stomach didn't contain it, so he confirmed that the killer eats milk tart.

Later on, at the APD, a member of FEAR threatened the player to stop the investigation or else the player would die. Adison tried to arrest the person but before she could do it, the FEAR member escaped and headed towards the park. The duo came there but didn't found any trace of the person. Instead, they found a torn photo and a laptop. After investigating, the two headed back to the APD and restored the torn photo. They discovered an unknown woman who was Teresa Smith, the mother of the victim. The two informed her about Dylan's murder, which results to Teresa being unfortunate. She decided to have some milk tart after the conversation. Afterwards, they examined the locked laptop and gave it to Michael Harvis, where they found out that the laptop belongs to Franco Gutierrez. They found a video of Franco throwing garbage at Dylan's face. They also see some pictures of him eating milk tart. When Franco was interrogated, he told the duo that he discovered Dylan came from a very poor family. He said that Dylan's tour to the victims of the recent typhoon was a publicity stunt to increase his popularity.

Later on, the two went again at the park and found a surveillance camera and a faded folder. They went back at the APD and unlocked the surveillance camera they found and sent it to Michael. Unfortunately, Michael said that the killer never looked at the camera, but he found out that the killer is 5 foot and 6 inches tall. Afterwards, they examined the faded folder and found out that it belongs to Derek Wimple. When they analyzed it, Colin said that Derek was experimenting on human subjects. The process is to inject ethylmodine inside the human subject to make them stronger and aggressive. The folder also contains Dylan's assessment with Derek. When he was interrogated, Derek said that the victim had trouble trusting him. When Adison suggested he killed the victim, Derek refused and said that his job within FEAR is to help people whenever they're in trouble.

Back at the APD, the two had trouble finding evidence about the killer. Suddenly, Michael found a heat signature on the satellite map and discovered that there's a hidden underground structure right below the docks. The duo headed there and found more evidences: an effigy of the victim, a trash can and a purse. When they examined the effigy, they found some fibers that belong to Ryan West. When he was asked why he created it, he told them that Dylan tried to attacked him when he saw him eating milk tart. During the attack, he noticed that his eyes were changing colors. Ryan hated him much more and created the effigy. After the interrogation, they found a bloody handkerchief from the trash can they collected in the underground base. When they analyzed it, the blood matches the victim's and found two X chromosomes. Colin finds out that the killer is female. They examined the purse and found traces of sunscreen. Colin said that the sunscreen they collected has white substances that came from milk tart, so he confirmed that it came from the killer. He said that sunscreen protects tattoos from fading in the sun, so they collected the last clue: the killer has a tattoo.

After gathering evidences, the team managed to incriminate the victim's mother, Teresa Smith. Teresa claimed innocence, but Adison managed her to admit that she killed him. Teresa told them that she would never want to kill her son, but after she received a message from FEAR, she didn't know what to do. If she can't shoot Dylan with the gun they gave her, Teresa said that she would be killed. Judge Kara Montes therefore sentenced her to 9 years in jail for the premeditated, involuntary manslaughter of the victim given that she did not mean to do it, but was forced.
