—Case Teaser

Making It Even Worse is a case featured in Criminal Case as the one-hundred and seventy-second case of the game. It is the fifty-seventh case of The Mystery and the fifth case in Beverly Boulevard.

After the dam had broken open and a flood had damaged a part of the district, Major and the player quickly scouted the streets for any civilians in danger on Chief Tempest’s orders. They soon approached one of the Boulevard’s flooded mansions before Major spotted a man floating in the water, seemly unconscious. After the duo got over to where he was, the detective duo then realized that he was dead, his head bashed open with a bleeding wound. After identifying him as local lawyer Eric Caldon, who they met before, they sent the body to Ethan, who confirmed that the killer had put all their strength in the hit, killing him severely after two strikes to the head. They first suspected former lawyer and wealthy cultist Marcus Wellington, Maxwell's husband and investigative reporter Joseph Marlow as well as wolf tamer Clark Moore before learning that there had been a break-in at the victim's law office.

When Major and the player got to the offices where the victim and other lawyers worked, they could not find proof of who could have broken in. However despite this, the player found clues to add Alexandra’s mother Faith Dubois and journalist Natalia Irving to the suspect roster. They then found out about Joseph and Eric’s anger toward each other due to Joseph writing about scandalous news to do with Eric and one of his clients as well as discovering that Clark threatened the victim that if Eric dared to try to put anything on him when he tried to take the Barlow family’s farm, he would get payback. However that threat ultimately failed when Eric used his skills in the law against the wolf tamer. Later on, the duo then heard from Maxwell that the lawyers were going back to work in the offices.

Major and the player then hurried to the offices, where they discovered that politician Theodore Fawkes was stopping the lawyers from breaking potential evidence into the murder. Theodore then wished them luck on the investigation as the player and Major discovered that Marcus had started moving the victim’s stuff and that he had a sick pleasure of burning some of the victim’s possessions. They also found out that Faith had been harassed by the victim following her husband’s arrest for his involvement in the heist. They also discovered that Natalia had collected and showed some embarrassing footage of Eric in his underwear to humiliate him after his rise in the industry from a broke man to a filthy liar and cutthroat lawyer. After Major and the player then filed a bloodstained statuette of the victim as the murder weapon, they were able to incriminate Natalia for the homicide.

After Major confronted Natalia about the murder, she denied all of the accusations of the murder. Major then asked her if she actually would murder someone over social status, which caused the journalist to tell them that Eric shouldn’t have been playing with society. When Major asked what she meant, she admitted to the crime and told the detectives that the victim thought he could play with the law and confront the greater good of the city. Confused, Major asked her what she meant, before the journalist smirked and told them that they only had been pawns in everything they’ve done to fight the evil. She explained that Eric had wanted to catch whoever was behind the kidnapping of the dogs, before he discovered that she was connected to it. She then said that he found out while she was reassuring the population that their dogs would be back soon even though she was well aware that those fur balls wouldn’t be back. She then told them how she only had to bring him outside and attack him, bashing his head open with a statue to shut him up. Disgusted, Major handcuffed her and brought her to court where Judge Brighton sentenced the journalist to sixty years in jail. Back at the station, the team was recapping the case when Diego burst into the precinct and told them that Judge Brighton had gone missing after the trial.

After the team learned that the judge had gone missing, Major and the player headed to the now drained Beverly Street, the location where she was last seen. The player and Major then discovered a upended trashcan, which suggested it was knocked over in a struggle. After the player searched through it, the duo discovered Denise’s scarf, as well a faded card that fell from the scarf. After the player attempted to recover any information on the card, only to fail, they then sent it to Erika for analysis. The tech expert then told them that she was able to recover the information, but it belonged to someone they wouldn’t enjoy speaking to, disgraced businessman, Horatio Fontaine. The detectives then headed to the prison to talk to the former businessman, who only smirked and told them that it took them long enough to discover he was part of this bigger plan. He went on to explain that his nickname was The Mastermind, the one that was supposedly gonna finance half of the cult’s stolen goods before his mother-in-law got too close to it. When asked how he kidnapped the judge, he chuckled and told them that this was the job of one of his acolytes, nicknamed “The Barker”. He then explained how he helped plan with them about how the city’s favorite justice enforcer was gonna have a bad time without the police to protect her. This snide remark then caused the player to retain Major from punching the old man before the detectives then left the cell, Horatio watching with devious eyes.

Meanwhile, Diana and the player headed to the flooded mansion per Maxwell after he got a call from Joseph about a dead dog. Diana and the player then collected the corpse of a dead dog floating in the waters and unlocked the padlocked collar before sending it to Ethan. The coroner then told the team that he had some bad news to tell them as he then explained that the dog's corpse was much different from the two they had found previously, explaining that nanotechnology had been discovered in the dog's system. He then told them that he believed that Natalia might've known anything, prompting the detectives to head back to the law offices, where the player found a locked cryptex. They then unlocked the cryptex and found a faded diagram, which the player revealed. Ethan then believed that the dogs were small test subjects for a human experimentation per their findings.

After all the events, with Judge Brighton still missing, Chief Tempest then told the team that the Barker was likely the threat who had sold off the treasure and used dognapped pets as experiments for a potentially dangerous plan. However before she could tell Diana and the player to get out there to find the Barker, Major came to tell the team that a body had been found in an animal shelter in the district.
