Land of Milk and Vinegar is the twenty-second case in PetersCorporal's second season, Blue Coasts, as well as the first one in the New Lakeland district.

Case Background

Jerry Bryar and the player were admiring the beauty of the new district, New Lakeland, when they were assigned to investigate a death in a Honey Hill Ranch (a snobbish bar selling delicacies and mainly honey-based products). The victim turned out to be Samantha Blassier, a city councillor member of a rich family. The player discovered that she had a reservation there for breakfast with Alicia Appleton, another rich lady they'd previously met in Evergreen Tops. According to her, Samantha had been working on a legislation project she wanted to present at the City Council and that had caused a fight between the victim herself and Scarlett Svykozsky, wife of the new Mayor, that very morning at Honey Hill Ranch. Moreover, Jerry started getting nervous due to the shop cashier, Fred Sommerville, apparently flirting with him.

Later on, thanks to a beekeeper (Winston Lucker) who worked there and reported the victim's lost handbag, the player found the folder containing Samantha's legislation project. The bill turned out to be about state assistance for The Kitty Cats, since they'd been victims of sexual exploitation at the hands of the previous Mayor (Akiko Miyadai). Jerry and the player asked Scarlett why she was so opposed to the project, and she said that it was not only because she hated Samantha but also because her husband, Mayor Danniel Svykozsky, had told her the bill was a terrible idea and that it shouldn't even be brought up at the City Council. Jerry was left wondering why Danniel didn't support the project, since he'd been commanded by Akiko to clean the reputation of the Socialist Coalition and helping The Kitty Cats would make him look good to the public and would separate him from Akiko's crimes.

Suddenly, John-Richard Way barged into the headquarters and introduced himself as the Commander of the New Lakeland Police Branch, only to demand that the player hand over to him Samantha's legislation project. Jerry refused at first, but since they have to follow Commanders' orders, they had no choice but to let him have the project. Jerry theorized that John had to be a friend of the Svykozskies, involved in censoring the project, but the Chief said they shouldn't judge him so early in the game before they knew his intentions. Moreover, they found out thanks to Samantha's cellphone, that Alicia had told her the legislation project was a terrible idea, meaning that she was not only against it but that she'd lied to the police when she said she didn't know what it was about. Alicia said that in Blue Coasts' economic situation, passing Samantha's project would mean an incoming recession (as the player had found out in the previous case), so they had to find some other way to help The Kitty Cats other than giving them money to avoid a crisis. Moreover, Sally Michigan (the cook and waitress) told the player that Samantha was going to buy Honey Hill Ranch since the company was looking for new owners. With enough evidence in hand, the team arrested Sally for the murder.

Sally admitted that she had killed Samantha due to the fact that she kept treating the ranch workers like they were her personal servants. After causing a fuss at the apiary, she ordered Sally to go look for her things over there, to which she replied she was only in charge of the kitchen and tables but not of her personal stuff. When Samantha replied with a bee analogy about how workers should assist the higher hierarchy in every one of their needs, Sally decided to poison her tea. Judge Peggy Jasmine sentenced her to 20 years in the Psychiatric Prison Hospital, after which a tribunal would reevaluate her sentence. Right after the trial, Annabelle Chashiroua told the player and Jerry that Samantha's project to help The Kitty Cats had just entered debate in the City Council, as what they were now calling "the Laila Myers bill".

Since Commander Way was the one in power of the document, Jerry concluded that he had to have been the one who presented the project in the City Council, so they went to his office to ask what his intentions were. John-Richard revealed that he's actually the Mayor's cousin but they haven't talked for years. When Danniel told him that the player was in power of a document that shouldn't make it to the Council, John knew he was being used for corruption and instead decided to retrieve the legislation project but to have it be discussed at the City Council instead of giving it to his cousin. Trying to find out what would be Danniel's next move, they found a leaflet that he was apparently planning to use for some "elections". This puzzled Jerry since the next elections would be in 2 years and it was hard to believe that Svykozsky was planning 2 years ahead. They asked his wife Scarlett about it, but she said she had no idea about Danniel's job and instead commented on the fact that she was going to buy Honey Hill Ranch.

Besides that, Jerry asked the player for a conversation with them in private. Repeatedly saying how uncomfortable he was, he asked the player if he came across as gay, since it's always men who flirt with him and also because people tend to assume he is gay. He told the player that even though he'd always had crushes on women, he knew he was bisexual and for the first time a guy had really caught his interest: Fred Sommerville. Seeing that Fred had been flirting with him during the investigation, he thought this could be his chance to be in his first relationship ever but he didn't know how to approach him. With the player's help and some cookies, Jerry dropped by the Honey Hill Ranch where Fred worked and stayed there to have tea with him. Later on, he thanked the player for their support after he came out to them, but asked for it to be kept as a secret.

Suddenly, Mayor Danniel Svykozsky appeared on TV to announce that there would be elections again due to the fact that he earned his place as a Mayor not because of his merit but because of Akiko Miyadai being arrested and leaving the open spot to him. However, Jerry stated that the real reason was distancing himself from Miyadai's crimes as well as the Laila Myers bill and the economic downfall it was going to cause. If he won the elections, people would feel he was a leader with support and merit. If he lost, he'd pass the crisis onto someone else. Due to the elections, the Reform Party sent a letter to Hans Rougel telling him he would be their mayoral candidate, finally giving him the chance to fulfill his dream of being the Mayor of Blue Coasts.

Trivia

  • The case name comes from two idioms:
    • "Land of Milk and Honey", which refers to a place full of resources and opportunities.
    • "You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar", which means that you will get along better with people by being nice to them than by having a nasty attitude.
