Going Broke and Dead is a case featured in Criminal Case, appearing as the ninth case of the game. It is the ninth case set in the city of Crimsonden and also the ninth one to take place in the Crystal Manors district.
Plot[]
Midge ran as fast as she could. They knew, they knew, they knew. The team knew about her being the thief. She tossed the bags of cash as fast as she could, some in her little cabin, and some in the lake. She then took the phone, and dialed a number. "Thanks for informing me about the fact they know." Midge said. "Of course, I needed you for the mission." The voice on the other side answered. He already took care of Brian, so that's not a worry, but avoid him at all costs. The voice on the other side continued. "We'll play him like an angry justice seeking puppet, goodbye Midge, my contact will meet you on the other side." Midge breathed a sigh of relief, and walked into the cabin. Midge soon came by the contact, who said that they had just been paid, and that after their work was done, they would leave Midge. Midge greedily said to the contact to return the money, before the contact raised their gloved hand, and started spraying liquid nitrogen all over Midge, until she was a statue on the floor. The contact then moved out.
Allison, Malcolm and Evelyn rushed into the cabin, only to see Midge sprayed with liquid nitrogen on the floor. The team quickly took her body to Ian, while searching the Wine Gardens near the Bradley manor, as that was the last place Midge had been in. The team found enough evidence in the wine gardens to suspect Ansel Gardner, the butler for the Swifts, who said he had come here to enjoy the fresh air, Colton Swift, who was freaking out about the plan going completely wrong, and the manor burning down, Griffin Woods, the gardener, who said that the thief was gone, so Crystal Manors could finally rest at night, and as a final suspect Tyrone Raines, who was just tired of getting suspected in murders, before Nicholas Kirkland said that one of their own had been caught trying to sneak into the mansion.
Allison, Malcolm and Evelyn went into the interrogation room, where they found Joel sitting on the seat. Allison asked why Joel would try to break into the Swift Manor, now that the thief problem was over, and it would just look more suspicious, and Joel said that they wouldn't understand, and that even if he was not the heir, he had family loyalty and trying to save his family from slander from Felicity's actions. Malcolm looked on him disapprovingly, saying that his family brought that upon themselves. They then searched the Swift manor to also suspect Ellen Perkins for the murder, and she said that after the fire, she was busy getting her stuff back, and writing a resignation letter as she felt this district was too unsafe. The team also searched the wine gardens once more, to find more motives that Arthur was thinking about reinstating Colton as the heir, but Midge tried to stop him again and again. The team wondered why Midge stopped him, because Colton was way easier to control than Sybil as heir, and Sybil was also kidnapped. The team also found that Griffin and Midge once worked together, but Midge had scammed him, and Griffin had hated her ever since. Midge had also looked down upon Tyrone and offered to him a flight ticket to another city, as she couldn't bear him to "suffer" but Tyrone just told the detectives that Midge's tone was condescending. The team also learned that somebody wanted to give them information.
The team went outside to find Ansel there. Ansel told the team that he had received a message meant for Midge, and the message read that they should meet at the cabin. Knowing that this message came from somebody who ordered the murder, or the killer themselves and was misdelivered, the team took the message to search it for the clues. The team also searched the backdoor of the Swift Manor only to find that Joel had found out about the Bradley thief before the team did, and had hid it from the team. Joel explained that they won't get his type of family loyalty, and that he shows it in mysterious ways, before Evelyn told him to shut up, and that it was not family loyalty, it was a cover-up. The team also found out that Ellen had been asked to join Midge, but Ellen refused thinking it was a business scam rather than a thief join up. The team searched Midge's hideout one more time to find one final clue, before they narrowed down their suspect list to arrested Tyrone Raines for the murder of Midge Royce.
Tyrone confessed to the murders almost as Malcolm put him under arrest. The four detectives were surprised at why he was so willing to be arrested, when he revealed the truth, that the conspiracy had multiple leaders, and that one of them worked from Spanish City, The team asked him to say more about them, but he replied saying that he was a fugitive as he disobeyed orders. The orders were to place Midge under safety in a warehouse outside Crimsonden. He however had enough of the citizens of Crystal Manors trying to demean his work again and again, so he murdered Midge to send a message to the conspiracy and the elites of Crystal Manors. Tyrone said his plan was to take all the money, but as soon he heard of the manhunt, he got scared. He then cheekily said that the fact that the team knew about Midge being the thief reaching Midge before Eleanor had started the manhunt could only mean two things, either that somebody had tapped the station, or the more likely alternative, that the informant was in the team, or present in the station at the time of the discovery. Allison shouted that she wasn't believing this crap, and that Tyrone was tricking them. Tyrone then said that both he and Allison knew which option was more likely. Evelyn went to put handcuffs on the killer, but then Tyrone brought out a smoke bomb, and exploded it, knocking the Harmon siblings out cold, and Allison tried to run after Tyrone, but he was long gone.
The team then reported back to the station, where Eleanor shouted how the team let another killer out of their loose. Eleanor shaked her head, and said that they had to make Midge's death public, so the official manhunt for Tyrone could start, and said that she left the official police stamp in the gardens. Eleanor also told the detectives to search the cabin once more to find any more clues. The detectives searched the wine gardens, where they found the official stamp, and they also found Joel crying in the gardens. Joel said that he messed up by keeping it a secret that one of the Bradleys was paying the thief to steal, and that he wanted to resign. Evelyn said that Joel was a useful part of the team, and him resigning would be a huge loss for the team. The team searched the Swift manors, where they found Joel's letter to Eleanor applying for an opening in the tech expert job. Malcolm showed Joel the document, saying that he had made his choice, and sometimes choices needed to be final, and that getting the best of both worlds is a very tough thing rarely possible. Joel wiped his tears, while Evelyn went to make a call to her informants in the veranda. The team also returned the official stamp to Eleanor saying that the document needed to be stamped. Eleanor stamped the document. After a few hours, as the sun started to rise, new stations flashed Tyrone's face, while the manhunt raged on.
The team also searched the cabin in the dawn, where they found a burner phone possibly the one from where one of the leaders of the Conspiracy called Tyrone. The phone was sent back to Joel, who was back as tech expert. Joel analyzed the phone and informed the team that he had bad news. He said that Tyrone had received a call, where the speaker using a voice changer just said "You are Dead.". The team decided to search the area again, where they found straps of Tyrone's torn T Shirt, which revealed he was headed to Haunting Street, where the team was going. The manhunt was soon redirected to the district, and before the news channels changed their topics, Tyrone was arrested by the beat cops, and brought to the station for a trial. The team spoke to Judge Cross, who said that a emergency trial could be held. And soon, Tyrone was escorted to trial by Malcolm and Allison, while Evelyn went to take care of Louis who was recovering from the bomb attack.
The trial began with Judge Cross listing the crimes against Tyrone, saying that he murdered Midge Royce, that he stole money from the money Midge stole, that he used a smoke bomb against police officers, and assisted in the obstruction of justice by murdering Midge instead of her being assisted, all the seats were filled, when a dart came through the glass window shattering the glass, and hit Tyrone in the upper arm. His arm started turning green, and the assailant jumped to the ground. Malcolm and Allison tried to catch the shooter, but to no avail. Nicholas remarked how this shooter was not "The Justice", saying that their aim was sloppy, and hit Tyrone's arm instead of neck, which only injured him. He also mentioned how on the Mansion murder scene, the Jacob Colbert murder scene and the Brian Britton murder scene, some illusion to the word Justice was used which was absent here. Tyrone was escorted to the medical bay, while Judge Cross said after his treatment was over, he would be sentenced to 50 years in prison.
On the other hand, Arthur Swift paid the team a visit to talk about his daughter Sybil. He said that the team hadn't made any progress on the kidnapping, to which Ian replied saying that they were doing their best. Arthur remarked how a bag was sent to him, and the team went to the Swift Manor wearing protective gear to check out the bag. The bag contained Sybil's dress from the gala, and a message that said that they needed to stop looking for her. Corinne started crying saying that a similar message was sent to her 2 years back, when she was 18 about her parents who used to live in Haunting Street. The team started to piece together a connection between Tyrone running to that district, Corinne's parents dying and Sybil's kidnapping, and put together that the base of operations had shifted to the district now that Crystal Manors was safe.
On a grassy hill, a figure ran and ran. The figure quickly reached the top of the hill, with a crossbow in hand. The figure handed over the crossbow to another hooded figure, a pair of brown eyes looking deep into the other eyes. The figures greeted each other, and one of the figures said that they were not taking risks next time, while the other laughed and said, "as long I have him wrapped around my finger, nobody can touch us. We will defeat The Justice, we will defeat all our enemies, you just take care of the kidnapping, my dear precious puppet will be manipulated into the rest."
