Friend or Foe is a case featured in Criminal Case where it appears as the fifty-fourth case in Sinner's Enigma. It takes place as the fifth case in the Ashened Abyss district of Evergrace.
Plot[]
After the team had found out that an unknown citizen had knowledge of the Crow's whereabouts, Cameron and the player were called to the local historical square where an ancient guillotine was. Once the detectives got to the historical execution square, they then found the corpse of tailor Joshua Barnett sliced in half by the guillotine blade, Jason confirming that the victim was forced into the path of the guillotine blade. Cameron and the player then investigated the execution square and a city wall watchtower where Joshua volunteered, soon collecting clues to suspect animal ranger Samuel Howler, jack of all trades Jack Parker, Katelyn's girlfriend and prostitute Diana Arias and gothic playboy Brystol Vázquez in the murder. Soon after, the detectives were informed by Chief Sinnett that someone had called about a vandalized café.
Cameron and the player proceed to investigate the café and respond to the caller, café owner Bruno Antony about the murder. Antony said that he saw a bunch of masked Resistance members crowding his windows and spraying harmless graffiti all over them. When they asked him about Joshua, Bruno sweated and shook his head, saying he never heard of the tailor. They then investigated his café before suspecting courthouse architect Jane Nelson after finding out that she had a cup of coffee with the victim. After discovering that the victim consulted to Diana after his fiance's death and that Joshua had a disagreement with Jack, Cameron and the player were confused about the peculiar roster of suspects when Samuel approached them, saying that one of his wolves found evidence to their investigation.
They then learned that Samuel’s wolf had found a strange photo which proved Jane was trying to bribe people for needs. They then questioned Jane, who confessed that in the dark times, she found an opportunity before Samuel confessed that he was jealous of the victim due to his posh lifestyle, Brystol was formerly jealous over Joshua about the victim’s deceased fiancée Julietta and that Joshua critiqued Bruno’s sweets to be fattening. In the end, the detectives finally found enough evidence to uncover the foe, and Joshua’s killer to be Brystol.
They then confronted Brystol about the homicide, the playboy initially denying the accusations against him, telling them that he had gotten over his jealousy. However the playboy then cracked and confessed, telling them that he was convinced that Joshua was behind the disappearance of one of his “baes”, Payton Underwood. He then told them how he looked into the victim’s actions, following him to find out if he could find out more on his bae, eventually confronting the tailor himself. The tailor then denied the kidnapping accusation and the duo got in a fight, ending with Brystol pushing Joshua into the guillotine and letting the rope fall. When Katelyn confronted him about allying with the Crow, Brystol then denied that he would be helping a serial killer. A few seconds after Brystol confessed, a gun barrel was forced into Katelyn’s head, the one holding the weapon revealing himself to be cardsharp Jordan Vance. The cardsharp then grinned and then told Brystol that he was thankful for his willingness to kill Joshua. He then explained that he had given Payton a train ticket to New York and encouraged her to go without telling anyone, explaining her “disappearance”. Jordan then told Katelyn and the player that they should be careful about who they trust, explaining that he crafted the murder investigation as a distraction, planting evidence, vandalizing Bruno’s cafe, all to make a perfect murder reflecting on the seven deadly sins. Soon after, Katelyn then attacked Jordan by smashing him in the face with her camera, before the detective ducked away from the cardsharp’s gun and forced his arms back, handcuffing him for his involvement in the murder of Joshua Barnett. The player and Katelyn then noticed that Brystol had vanished. They then took Jordan to Judge Lorelle, who sentenced Jordan to life in prison for the murder and his allegiance to ENIGMA. After the arrest, Cameron swore to find Brystol and decipher Jordan’s message about who they couldn’t trust.
Cameron and the player then decided to head to the execution square to see if they could find anything that Jordan might've left behind. They then salvaged a locked journal, which revealed the notes Jordan had written about the murder. Skylar then revealed that the notes was written by Jordan and her aunt, Isabel Lannuzzi, and that there was notes mentioning their plans to execute the missing Mayor, in front of the entire population, before taking the city over for their own. She also revealed that there was a series of numbers written on it, which prompted Cameron and the player to question Jordan about the numbers. Despite the convict denying his knowledge of the numbers, he mumbled something about the wall, which prompted the player and Cameron to investigate the wall watchpoint, where they found a strange map that the player restored. They then consulted Samuel, who told them that it was a map of the Ashened Abyss Valley, where the Crow was most likely hiding out due to the insignia of a crow in the middle of the valley.
Meanwhile, Diana came to the station, telling them that she was worried about her girlfriend Katelyn, following the arrest of Jordan Vance, due to Katelyn being in a near-death situation. She then asked the player and Camilla to help her search for Katelyn, the detectives soon deciding that they could search Bruno's café for any clues as they investigated there earlier. Camilla and the player then discovered Katelyn's discarded camera, still stained with Jordan's blood from when she attacked him, and they then questioned Bruno about if he saw her. Bruno then told them that he had talked to her, the junior detective telling him that she missed her old life, before Katelyn had left in the direction of Vexation Woods. Camilla then decided to head back to the station to fix Katelyn's camera with Seamus while Diana and the player headed to Vexation Woods to find Katelyn. They then found Katelyn in the woods crying, before Diana comforted her girlfriend. Katelyn then told them that Jordan's words about who they could trust resonated with her as she remembered her sister when she was uncovered as the Crow and Sophia when she was uncovered as the Sinner's Hunter. She then started to worry that other ones close to her could be bad, before Diana comforted her girlfriend, and told her that she wouldn't betray her, as she then kissed Katelyn on the lips.
After all the events, Chief Sinnett told the detectives that they had to find the Crow and stop Isabel Lannuzzi from carrying out with the execution of the Mayor. Camilla then came into the room, her face pale, as seh then told them with her hands shaking, that Katelyn had received and seen a Rorschach test that had the words "the Raven has awaken" on it, before the junior detective fled the station. With Katelyn out there along with the Crow, Chief Sinnett told Cameron and the player to find the Crow before Katelyn got to her.
In a dark forest in the Valley, two people are arguing, before one shoves the other against a tree, the victim's head splitting open from the injury. Blood splattered nature as a victim gasps for breath, as a rope is forced against their throat, until their breath is finally exhaled, and the victim slumps against the tree. Then a caw is heard as a murder of crows rises from the treetops as a murderer walks away from the scene...
