In Memoriam is a case featured in Criminal Case, appearing as the first case in No Man's Land and the first case overall. It takes place as the first case in the Willow Grove district of Easthaven.
Plot[]
A fog rolls over the streets of Easthaven, the smog stretching into claws which gripped and grabbed on the onlookers standing idly by. They were not sure whether they should run, or hide, but as the fog opened its mouth to envelop them, they had a feeling it was destiny...
It was a day of mourning in Easthaven, marking six months following the release of Aida Ashridge's bioweapon. The team were preparing to attend the memorial, each dressed in their best attire - sans Sierra Anderson who didn't get the dress code. However, it was the first day for the newly-appointed player in the ruined city on its knees. To help them learn the ropes, the forever-joyful yet equally as scatter-brained Chief Nguyen suggested they pair with Oscar Ordóñez, the reclusive detective who often sat on his lonesome in the corner. Mason winked and promised Oscar didn't bite before hurriedly searching his desk for a report. At the memorial, Oscar stood quietly as they surveyed the area, despite the player's attempts to make small talk with them. Suddenly, Oscar lifted his finger and pointed to a sleeping man by one of the tombstones. There, doctor Bhima Anagal was draped, a bouquet of flowers shoved down his throat.
With the memorial approaching fast, Oscar theorized that Bhima's murder on the same day as the service as no coincidence; Bhima's treatments being instrumental during the outbreak. Coroner Nia Naledi got to work, though she admitted she hadn't seen something quite as disgusting since her days with the Global Protection Agency. A scalpel in her hand, she confirmed the stems of the flowers cut Bhima's throat and internal organs, like a sword. Moreover, they questioned hospital secretary Trin Liu, motivational speaker Jason Sinulaki and volunteer worker Harry McCorrister, who all had only good things to say about the supposed 'good doctor'. As the pair discussed their findings, Malik Irani walked in nonchalantly and introduced himself, before telling them that, like always, he had a finding that would break their case wide open.
He exclaimed that he input the types of flowers into his machine, dubbed the Machirani, and cross-referenced those with florists within walking distance to the memorial; Orchid's Orchids being the only remaining option. There, they suspected grieving woman Tiana Holland, hospital benefactor Zachariah Pearson, and retired Easthaven Educator CEO Margot Valentine. Later, they learned Jason had threatened to reveal Bhima broke outbreak regulations if he didn't let him speak at the memorial instead and Bhima was paying Trin after he failed to save her mother, leaving her heartbroken, before profiling assistant Juana Campbell (whose mentor had been absent all day) greeted the player. After extending her hand, she shook her head and said she'd found a credible death threat sent to Bhima just hours before his murder.
She exclaimed that Tiana had threatened to choke Bhima to death with the same flowers she was leaving on her husband's grave; the woman exclaiming that Bhima hated her husband and purposefully gave him insufficient care - practically murdering him. However, with no evidence to back up her claims, they reinvestigated the memorial and found proof that Zachariah wanted Bhima to work on the new hospital ward he was building, though he refused, and that Margot wanted to write an expose about how Bhima handled the outbreak. Harry later claimed that Bhima was stuck-up and virtuous, taking all the acclaim even though volunteer workers like him worked doubly hard to help. The killer was then Trin.
Trin sighed upon confrontation and quickly admitted to the murder, crossing her arms angrily. She explained that during the height of the bioweapon outbreak, Bhima and the hospital's resources ran dry. They did their best to save everyone they could, but soon, it became apparent that just wouldn't be the case: that sacrifices would need to be made. Firstly, Bhima started by neglecting the elderly, believing the younger took precedence. As the situation continued to worsen, so did the decisions Bhima had to make. One day, Bhima was faced with an awful conundrum: to save Trin's mother or a doctor who could help fight Aida's bioweapon. Trin begged Bhima to save her mother but he refused. Trin had to watch as her mother, who could've been saved, was neglected, later passing away. On the day of the memorial, Bhima told Trin to keep quiet about the decisions he made, offering her a large sum of money. Angered and frustrated, Trin realized that Bhima only paid her money to preserve his public image, not out of guilt, and snapped. She soon bought a bouquet of her mother's favourite flowers and symbolically killed Bhima with it, draping him over the memorial for all to see.
In court, Judge Cross - only 'slightly' intoxicated - held his gavel lazily. Reading through Trin's confession, he agreed Bhima shouldn't have chosen people's fates but they all had to make tough decisions, like him taking up yoga to appease his wife. However, he countered that Bhima's decision only angered Trin when it affected her and sentenced her to 25 years in prison. Outside the court, Oscar nervously shook the player's hand and reluctantly congratulated them on their first case solved. His phone then lit up with notifications from Juana, who insisted she was worried about Kelvin.
---In Critical Condition (1/5)---
Juana twirled her red hair carefully as she explained that Kelvin had been irate and panicked in the days leading up to the memorial, disappearing in the morning. She naturally assumed the memorial dredged up sordid memories - Kelvin had been affected by the bioweapon six months ago and was rushed to hospital - but Kelvin's mad ramblings left her perturbed. The trio soon headed to Marigold Road and searched Kelvin's porch, eventually finding his satchel draped over his rocking chair. Per an analysis of Kelvin's notepad, Juana ascertained that Kelvin wrote his day plans in shorthand and exclaimed that he was at Orchid's florists. Accompanied by Kelvin's husband, Samson Jenkins, they rushed to the florists and found a confused Kelvin retracing his steps. Samson reached out and took his hand before Juana quickly inquired as to what was wrong. Kelvin stirred for a while, but Samson was able to convince him that they only wanted to help. The eccentric profiler let out a deep sigh and confessed they would think he was mad, but it had been weighing down on him. He professed he didn't remember much of his exposure to the bioweapon, only snapshots, but in the week leading up to the memorial, he began to recall something - something dark. He shakily explained that when he was lying on his hospital bed, in and out of consciousness, two gloved hands went to hold him down. Whoever this figure was restrained him tightly as they went to place a syringe into his arm, only to be disturbed by chatter outside the room. Just as quickly as this figure arrived, they disappeared. Juana and Samson were confused and concerned, but quickly asked Kelvin if he remembered anything else; Kelvin stating that was all.
With Kelvin heading back to his study, Nia slid over the desks and told the player to come with her. Nia explained that, as the person who produced the bioweapon antidote, she had been chosen as a speaker at the memorial. However, she wanted a deeper understanding of those who had been affected during the outbreak and, soon, they went to speak to Tiana. Tiana was initially apprehensive to share her story, but upon hearing who Nia was, she agreed. She tearfully recounted that she was working on the day of the outbreak so her husband took her daughter, Monique, to the playground. They were both caught in what followed. While Monique's father passed within hours, Monique held on. However, Tiana wiped her eyes frantically as she admitted that the damage had been extensive; Monique's organs had been damaged and while she was waiting for a transplant, she didn't know how long she had left. The pair quickly felt compelled to meet Monique at the hospital, where the young girl, bedridden, still chirpily greeted them with a wave. The player then helped Monique finish her drawing of her favourite fish, the clownfish, while Nia agreed to help the Holland family with their care. Afterwards, Tiana tiredly hugged Monique, before escorting the pair out.
At the memorial, Nia finished her speech, alongside a priest who made direct eye contact with Oscar. Zachariah then walked onto the stage and thanked everyone for attending. He told them Easthaven had suffered a great tragedy but, just how they did in 1969, they would endure. Maybe it would take time, maybe it would cost lives, and maybe at times hope would seem lost, but in the end, it'd be worth it. He then gave a special shout-out to the police department and asked the city clap as they set off on their mission to rebuild Easthaven from the ground up. As the claps resounded around the crowd, the player knew one thing... it would be an unforgettable journey.
That night, Oscar lay in bed, drifting in and out of sleep. The glow from a nearby streetlight seeped in through the curtains, gently illuminating the aged and withered wallpaper, as the hum of classical music floated over the bedsheets. From the edge of the room, it crept, blocking the streetlight and gliding in the pale gloom. There, it was; Oscar's friend, his oldest friend.
