Be There or Be Squared is a case featured in Criminal Case as the first case of Days of Apocalypse. It takes place in the first case of American Square.
Plot[]
As the player arrived in American Square, they were introduced to the squad's chief Norman Terrent, who partnered them with junior investigator Gus McGuff. After being partnered with Gus, Norman told them to meet the squad at the marathon that is being held. As the player and Gus arrived there, they were introduced to marathon organizer Jackie Stone, who told them that the marathon just started. Before Jackie can end their conversation, they heard a gunshot from there and people panicking. Finding out what happened, Gus and the player head to the scene, where they found runner and Rocket Cow promoter Zander Stark shot in the back. With this being a crime scene, Gus announced everyone that the marathon is closed until their investigation is done. After investigating the place, the team added the organizer Jackie Stone, gym teacher Jeffrey Reagan and yoga instructor Averly Worthington as their suspects. Mid-investigation, tech expert Donald Johnson told the team that Zander had a wife.
As Donald revealed it to the team, he told them that Zander married her 4 months ago until he got murdered. With the team finding out about his marriage, they put Zander's wife Priya in their suspect list. After putting the victim's wife as a suspect, Gus and the player investigated the food court and have enough evidence to suspect mafia henchman Raymond Conte. After doing another investigation at the marathon, the team discovered that Zander got into an argument with Jeffrey when he started flirting at his wife. Also, Zander angered Averly when he told her that yoga is a "dumb exercise". Soon later, Jackie tells the team that she will start the marathon while they are investigating Zander's murder.
Angry by her request, Gus told Jackie to wait for a few minutes before the team did another search. Later on, they found out that Zander bullied Jackie for being a nerd. The team also found out that Raymond threatened Zander after seeing him kicking a homeless man and Priya argued with Zander after he confronted Jeffrey. The team have enough evidence to arrest their first killer, Averly Worthington.
When the team confronted her, Averly tried to deny the accusations until the evidence was put against her. With Gus thinking that she killed Zander because of calling yoga a dumb exercise, Averly denied that and revealed that she and the victim dated. She explained that they met at a racing track in Utah and began loving in love with each other. Two months after they dated, Zander broke up with Averly for unknown reasons. Wanting to know why Zander broke up with her, Averly started doing her own investigation of what happened. After doing some research, she discovered that Zander was cheating on her with Priya in her RV. Angry, Averly confronted him, with Zander telling her that she doesn't love her anymore and started falling in love with another woman. Enraged that Zander cheated on her and then married the girl from the RV, Averly planned to kill Priya but backed out as Zander would date and remarry another woman. With that, Averly secretly pulled her gun out and shot Zander in the back, believing the people would think the marathon started. Disgusted by her plan, Gus and the player turned her to the authorities for the murder.
Post-trial, Donald asked the team to confront Raymond Conte to get answers from his friend's death. With the player partnering Donald, they confronted Raymond, who claims to know nothing about his friend's death or what happened. However, when Donald gave him some evidence about the mafia killing his friend, he became confused to not remember and told the team to find the answers to the death of the tech expert's friend. With that, they searched the food court to give the henchman some evidence. While investigating, they found a bunch of papers linked to the mafia. After analyzing the papers, one of the papers revealed a picture of Donald's friend with the notes saying "target is dead". When Donald went back to show Raymond the paper, the henchman still claims to not know as he worked for the mafia for a year. With the henchman claiming to not know the tech expert's deceased friend, Donald then told him that he is not over with him or the mafia before ending their conversation.
Meanwhile, Jackie approached Gus and the player to inform them about a suspicious man stalking her at the marathon. The team then went to investigate the scene, where they found a bouquet of flowers and a note with it. While examining the note, it is revealed that Jeffrey wrote that and was Jackie's stalker. When questioning Jeffrey, he explained that he was in love with her and didn't mean to scare her. After telling Jackie about her "stalker", she thanked the team and told them she will apologize to him.
After all the events, the team celebrated the player for their doing great on his first investigation. Few minutes later, lad chief Christy Cole informs them that the temperature's climate has went from down to very high.
