Don't Hate the Player, Hate the Brain is a case featured in Criminal Case as the forty-first case of Zombie Homeland and the first case in the Hippocampus Heights district of The Walled City of Seattle.

A week after the harrowing chapter that was the serial scratcher and Mr Goodbrain, Chief Babineaux assigned Nick Moore and the player to investigate a murder that had been reported in a local mansion. The detectives headed out to the mansion and entered a bedroom to discover the body of rich kid and wingman Toby Bueller, suffocated and seemingly smothered with a pillow. They then investigated the victim's bedroom and The Dancing Queen, suspecting the victim's previous hookup Faith Costner, lesbian makeup artist Scarlett Kiyoko and kinky dominatrix Regina Summer in the homicide. Soon after, they were informed by Xavier, after he pushed away Nick's advice on his sexual ventures with Christopher, that he had discovered a secret romantic spot that the victim would use for his wingman game.

The detectives then investigated the secret romantic spot Xavier spoke of, and the duo found clues to suspect drag queen Howard Schaffer and brain supplier Topher Briggs in the homicide, as Nick commented on how he could bring his boyfriend to the spot. They then discovered Toby had tried to dominate Regina, which angered her, and that Toby had drunkenly flirted with Scarlett, prompting the makeup artist to get a minor revenge by painting his nails for him. Soon after, the detectives were informed by Vampire Steve that Topher had been taking payments from the victim. They then discovered that Toby was paying the victim as a deal between the two that Topher would give some special brains for Toby's zombie clientele in exchange for the payments. They then found out that Faith and Toby had gotten into a fight that involved flowers and a couple of smoothies, and that Howard had used the victim's wingman services to find a lover. In the end, the detectives found enough evidence to ultimately arrest Howard for the murder.

The detectives then headed to confront Howard about the homicide, where the drag queen denied the accusations against him. When Nick asked Howard about the victim helping him with finding a new lover, the drag queen told them he wouldn't murder just because of that, which prompted Nick to confront him with the evidence. Howard then sighed and confessed to the murder, telling them that he had to find peace in killing Toby. He then admitted that Toby had been a wingman for his son, helping him to find a woman to love, and that night when his son had met up with Toby had ended in tragedy. When Nick asked him how, the drag queen then took off his wig, wringing it in his hands, as he told them that when his son had encountered a cute woman, they had left the bar to talk more. However, unknown attackers had attacked and shot the two of them, leaving Howard to mourn his son. Howard then said that when he got his son's possessions from the police, including his son's phone, he saw the texts between his son and Toby. He then admitted how he called for the victim's wingman services through his own number, and arranged to meet up with Toby. He then admitted that he let Toby do his work, scheming while doing so, before he then followed the wingman back to his mansion. There, Howard then used his charm to let Toby let him in, and he confronted Toby, before smothering him with a pillow, watching Toby's convulsing body become limp. The detectives then arrested Howard for the murder, and Judge Pryce then sentenced Howard to a twenty five year sentence in prison for the murder. After the arrest, Nick and the player were informed by zombie soldier Jill Quincy that she had found a new lead.

The detectives then questioned Jill about her new lead, and the zombie soldier told them that she had found rumors that Toby had been possessing drugs. The detectives then decided to head back to the victim's mansion, where they investigated the victim's bedroom, discovering a secret safe. The player then unlocked the safe, revealing a stack of folders, which they then sent to Vampire Steve for analysis. The tech expert then revealed that Toby had indeed gotten his hands on a batch of Utopium, and that the folder mentioned notes of stealing it from the deceased Ted Everglade. While there was no notes on the whereabouts of the drugs, the detectives then questioned Faith, who told them that she overheard him in the club talking about a massive gain. The detectives then searched the club, where they then found an official letter that mentioned the Utopium being sold to the CDC for a large sum. The player and Nick then informed Commander Buckley of their discoveries, and the commander then sighed and told them that he was thankful for their help. Major then told them that he would look more into the CDC's affairs with Utopium.

Meanwhile, Livia and the player decided to talk to Howard to investigate the incident that had befallen his son. Howard then told them that he did not know much about what happened, but he suggested to check their morgue records, prompting the player and Livia to question Ravi about the murders. Ravi then checked his files before he then gave them the full report, telling them that the son was a human and his date was a newly turned zombie, unregistered in the database. The detectives then checked the serial scratcher's victims only to find that the girl was not in the roster, prompting them to investigate where the murders happened, the secret romantic spot that Toby used. They then found a bullet casing in a tree stump there, which came from an unregistered handgun, meaning insurgents could be behind the murders. They then informed Howard of their discoveries, the drag queen then thanking them for investigating further into his son's murder.

The detectives then recapped their discoveries with the Chief, who told them that they had to look more into the mysterious scratches, unrelated to the serial scratcher.
