—Case Teaser

Death of a Sinner is a case featured in Criminal Case, it appears as the forty-third case in A World Forgotten and the two hundred and thirty-second overall. It takes place as the first case in the Victoria Road district of Ravenedge.

Plot

The smoke rises across the city as firefighters struggle to control the blaze. Elsewhere, the hospitals pile up with casualties as body bags are left strewn in the hallways. Isabella, her legs mangled, lays still, as her finger slowly twitches. The sound of sirens and crackling fire replace the fireworks in the night's sky. Welcome to 1901.

On New Year's Day, just hours after the train station bombing at the hands of Leblanc Devereaux, what was left of the team - Amethyst, Lawrence, Charity, and Cornelius all missing - regrouped. Tobias tried to organize them and charged Sienna and the player with looking for train driver Carlos McLean, who went missing following the explosion. Despite the fact that Carlos was supposed to be working on New Year's Eve, they learned he didn't show up and quickly rushed to his rail side home in Victoria Road. There, however, they found him dead on the tracks, pushed from a nearby overpass. Moira confirmed Carlos died after his spine was broke in two and theorized the killer had pushed Carlos onto the railway in hopes that the next train would destroy any evidence. After finding a faded tattoo on his wrist and a receipt for a nearby brothel in his front pocket, they questioned prostitute Mya Greene, who stated that she serviced Carlos and sent him on his way - nothing out of the ordinary. Doctor Dorothy Stanway and conductor Augustine Gilbert were also suspected, though they told the team to focus on the bombing instead. Afterwards, the pair asked for an update on the situation; Tobias explaining that rioters were calling for Marianne Rose's arrest. Suddenly, a drunken man walked in and demanded they turn over Carlos' body.

He revealed himself as Esteban Pike, the team knowing him as a local gang leader. He showed his wrist tattoo, the same Carlos had, and explained the pair were blood brothers and only he could give Carlos a proper burial. When asked why he was drunk, Esteban shouted that the station bombing and Carlos' death had sent him over the edge. Eventually, the pair were able to escort Esteban from the foyer, before questioning decorator Scarlett Pierre. Back at the overpass, the pair agreed that Carlos missing work was suspicious, and eventually discovered Dorothy discharged him upon discovering he was a movement supporter. She explained that the movement were tyrants, as proven by the bombing, and told Carlos to find a new doctor. Augustine also loaned Carlos large amounts of money, only to find Carlos had used them to book a ticket to New York. Afterwards, Sienna looked out at the window at the still-rising smoke and exhaled into her hand. Just then, Mya ran in and confessed she hadn't been honest.

Mya rubbed her arms nervously as she explained that Carlos would often ramble after their sessions, and although she had never fully understood what he meant, she had worked everything out following the bombing. She recounted how Carlos vowed to be loyal to the Rose Movement, even claiming that Marianne didn't do enough. Mya then shouted that she believed Carlos had helped plot the bombing with Leblanc, hence why he wasn't at work that night and was planning to flee to New York. Agreeing with Mya's hypothesis, a flyer found in Scarlett's purse revealed that Carlos had attempted to bring her into the Rose Movement, but she insisted to Sienna that she refused, before learning that Esteban's gang were storing weaponry which he claimed Carlos stole. Ultimately, the killer was Augustine.

Augustine shook his hands frantically and waved off their accusations, pointing his finger at the rising smoke and accusing them of wasting their smoke. Sienna started twirling her hair and began to play on Augustine's visible insecurities, ultimately causing the conductor to crack and grab his hat as he confessed. He shouted that Carlos was a demon - a demon that deserved to die. The pair had been close friends, hence why Augustine was happy to lend Carlos money, but the bombing changed everything. Augustine began to sob as he admitted that his brother, Elmer Farrington, had been killed in the blast. As Augustine sat, grief-stricken, he learned Carlos hadn't attended work. At first he thought nothing of it, but slowly, he started to piece it all together. Like a racing train through the night, Augustine charged to Carlos and fought with him. Eventually, the conductor subdued Carlos and beat him into telling the truth: Carlos, Leblanc, and a group of others had conspired to blow the train station - and Genevieve Osborne - up. Finally, with the truth ushered from Carlos' lips, Augustine gripped him by his legs and threw him over the side - fleeing in hopes that a train would destroy any evidence.

In court, Judge Haddid sympathised with Augustine and agreed that Ravenedge was in a state of crisis; however, they couldn't allow their feelings to cause them to act blindly, as it had started the whole mess to begin with. When asked if Carlos named his co-conspirators, Augustine shook his head. The law was the law and so Misbah sentenced him to ten years imprisonment. Outside the court, firemen still battled the flames. Sienna sat down and held her knees, knowing that the aftermath had only just begun - and it would be a very long night.

---Up in Smoke (1/6)---

The remainder of the team regrouped in the foyer, before a catatonic Amethyst glided to her office. Despite the team's attempts to reach out to her, she brushed them off. Hope also declared that Charity had locked herself in her bedroom, prompting Tobias to shake his head. Knowing they still had their work cut out for them, Sienna and the player opted to investigate Carlos and his group of co-conspirators by returning to his rail-side home. After following the scattered dust to a weirdly placed bookshelf, the player efficiently pulled it down and uncovered a crate hidden in the wall. Per Hope's analysis, she confirmed the crate contained detailed plans of the bombing: Genevieve's ticket information, blueprints of the station and stashes of money to start lives outside of Ravenedge if needed. Without Cornelius' help it had been challenging but she was able to isolate fingerprints belonging to Esteban on the money. Upon confrontation, Esteban claimed that Carlos needed help and he couldn't say no, but he knew nothing about the bombing. However, a later search of Esteban's gambling room uncovered a photo of Esteban's gang with Leblanc Devereaux. Their guns loaded, they raced to arrest Esteban for his involvement, only to discover he - and the rest of the gang - had disappeared into the night.

A few hours later, the firefighters had only just managed to subdue the flames as medics hurried in to salvage any life they could. Elsewhere, Hugo sat with his sons, Cornelius and Owen, as the three tried to process their loss. They believed their supporters would show them support but regardless, their grief was theirs and it would linger with them. Hugo prepared to make a statement to the city from the city hall podium, Cornelius awkwardly standing in the corner as he struggled to contain his emotions. A silence fell over Ravenedge as Hugo's voice echoed through every citizens' radio. The team stood grouped in a circle as Hugo claimed that the age of the Rose Movement was over; he would ensure it. Genevieve wouldn't die in vain. The Rose Movement had brought chaos to their streets for far too long, but he, and the Ravenedge Police Department, would return order, peace and prosperity, and justice to the violent militants who had spilled his wife's blood. He soon announced that the movement was outlawed and anyone seen supporting them would be arrested with expedience. The radio then trickled out.

The quiet was broken by Charity's return to the team, her eyes hazy and dark. Hope quickly ran up to her as Charity took her hand, albeit shakily, and asked for a debrief, which they gave. She pondered her words for a moment and held her head to balance herself, before ordering the team to make finding Esteban and his gang their top priority. When Tobias asked if what Hugo had said was true, that they would arrest anyone seen publicly supporting the movement, Charity reluctantly nodded, muttering under her breath that they didn't have a choice. The team's matriarch then disappeared into her office once more. As the smoke settled over the city, everyone in Ravenedge had their goals, their losses, their loves and hopes - but they also had their loyalties... and the intransigence to fight to the bitter end.

6AM. Lawrence sat at Isabella's bedside and held her hand as she slowly started to open her eyes. His face broke into a assuaged smile as he cradled Isabella's head, the beat cop too shaken to talk. Amethyst walked through a crowd of angry mayoral supporters smashing the windows of Marianne's house, demanding to know where she was. Amethyst then turned to them as a decision started to form in her mind. Finally, Scarlett walked down a dingy alleyway on her way to work, as the sun started to bleed over the cobbled rooftops, and she couldn't shake the feeling that someone out there was watching... watching her.
