—Case Teaser

Crumbling Down is a case featured in Criminal Case where it appears as the fifty-first case in Sinner's Enigma. It takes place as the second case in the Ashened Abyss district of Evergrace.

Plot

After a vow to take down ENIGMA, the team felt shaking in the ground. After Felix commanded the team to get to safety, they then hid under furniture and waited until the earthquake was over. After the earthquake, Felix directed Katelyn and the player to investigate the nearby square to make sure everyone's okay. They then rushed to the square but they discover the horrifying body of politician Kevin McLachlan, his torso mutilated and his spine brutally sticking out of his chest. They then suspected Jay’s assistant Ramona Samson, former mayor’s assistant Charlotte Donahue and homeless camp leader Leon Seajack, who was offered a job to protect the nearby resistance camp. Jason was in shock as he confirmed that the victim was not even unconscious when the killer mutilated his torso region. Katelyn and the player were worried on how Cameron will take the news before Seamus called, saying that he's found a hidden bunker under the town square.

Katelyn and the player headed to the coordinates Seamus provided and entered the hidden bunker, stocked with various canned goods and insulated water. They then discovered that the bunker belonged to the victim in preparation for a massive Resistance plan. They then investigated Kevin's possessions and suspected con artist Octavian Markham, who helped the victim collect resources for his bunker and mailman Winston Rose, who kept the victim informed of all the letters being sent through and from the Resistance. They also discovered that Charlotte and the victim were planning on taking over Mayor Monaco in an upcoming election. Soon after, while Katelyn and the player were discussing the case, they then saw Cameron, who was threatening to jump out of the window, to his death, to join his brother. After Skylar then came to convince the consultant/detective to step down, Cameron then reluctantly stepped down, Skylar hugging her teammate before telling the team that she would look after him, taking him to her library. After they discovered that Winston was released by Mayor Monaco as long he helped by infiltrating the Resistance despite Kevin's disagreement, they then found evidence to incriminate Leon Seajack for the murder.

Leon was carrying crates of supplies to the camp when confronted by Katelyn and the player. After Katelyn's initial accusation of the murder, Leon was shocked, surprised that they would ever suspect a poor man like him. However, Katelyn pressured him with evidence before he snapped, saying that Kevin was trying to stop Jay. Leon confessed that Jay preys on the unfortunate to work for him, and said that he was a defector of the Resistance. He says that Jay's plan was to release various prisoners from the overcrowded prison to work for him, knowing that time in prison along with various motives that display obvious sin would be more powerful than the EJD. However, if Kevin became mayor of Evergrace, it would revert all of Jay's plans, so Jay ordered Leon to kill Kevin. Knowing that Kevin would reminiscence over the former Evergrace by heading to the local town square, he used the knowledge of the fact to plan and then murder Kevin, hoping that the earthquake would bury evidence. Judge Umbright was ashamed of Leon's actions and sentenced him to sixty years in prison. As Katelyn talked about how that the investigation was an interesting investigation, they were informed by Chief Sinnett that they needed to help out with earthquake efforts.

After the trial, the player then questioned Charlotte about how they could help and she then told them that the hospitals needed more medical supplies. Katelyn then came up with the idea of raiding the bunker for supplies and the detectives then headed to the bunker, where they found a locked box that the player unlocked. After they sent the supplies for Jason to inventory, they then gave the supplies to Charlotte, who told them that she overheard Judge Umbright talking about the prison. They then headed to the ruined square to investigate and found a bunch of torn fabric, that they were able to restore to a prisoner's cap. Katelyn then read the tag for the owner, and shook as she realized that she had found her sister's cap.

Meanwhile, Cameron and the player questioned Winston about the Resistance, Winston telling the detectives that he had found a letter that was from Isabel Lannuzzi in a mailbox and that he left it in the homeless camp. They then headed to the homeless camp and found Winston's satchel and found the letter, albeit damaged. They then sent the damaged letter to Skylar for analysis, before the archivist then told them that while she couldn't get the full letter repaired, she was able to ascertain a phrase of the letter, saying "three hundred and fifty degrees". Unsure of the meaning, Cameron and the player then asked Octavian if he knew the phrase, and Octavian then remembered that the phrase, "three hundred and fifty degrees", was code for lighting something ablaze. Cameron then realized that Isabel must've ordered someone to light something ablaze.

After all the events, as Katelyn was being comforted by Camilla, Cameron then revealed that he checked with Inspector Cortez to confirm that Kyndall and Shawn Wakefield had gone missing. Cameron then told them that he was sure that the former Chief wouldn't betray them, believing that Shawn was most likely a hostage of the Crow. Soon after, Chief Sinnett told them that an abandoned town had gone up to "three hundred and fifty degrees".
