—Case Teaser

Code of Silence is a case featured in Criminal Case where it appears as the forty-eighth case in Sinner's Enigma. It takes place as the sixth case in the Sin Capitol district of Evergrace.

Plot

After Inspector Cortez arrested Chief Felix Sinnett for suppoused involvement in a criminal conspiracy, the Chief then told his whole team to run for their lives. Minutes later, Cameron, Jason and the player had ended up in a street all alone after the rest of the team had fled elsewhere. The player then noticed something odd off about something on the street and investigated the gloomy road to find... the body of businessman Ian Kaylock, his mouth nailed shut by nails. Jason then confirmed that the killer had manually nailed Ian's mouth shut with a hammer and nails. They then suspected Resistance leader Isabel Lannuzzi (faking the fact they weren't aware of her betrayal), journalist Elias Stanford, Ian's wife Ariel Kaylock and their daughter, laboratory chief Sophia Kaylock, in the murder. After the detectives learned from Jason (who was doing the autopsy in his house for the time being) that Ian was knocked unconscious before his murder, they were discussing the case when Ariel called them to tell them that while Sophia was out looking for the others, Ariel had heard clattering from her twin children's laboratory in their household's basement.

As they returned to the Kaylock household to investigate, they soon found out that the source of the clattering was actually a squirrel that had gotten into the basement, before the team then discovered Seamus’s presence in the laboratory, suspecting him and aristocrat Artemis Monaco in the murder. They then discovered that Ian had a slight argument with Ariel the previous night, that Ian questioned Isabel’s morals in the Resistance and that Elias wrote an article about Ian’s business in the newspaper despite Elias claiming that he never met the victim. They then discovered that the Resistance was out for blood as radio broadcasts called for rewards in the team members’ capture. The player and Cameron then quickly investigated again, soon finding out the twins' feelings about their father's workaholic life and Artemis's cursed talisman she sent to the victim. After all the events, the team (consisting of Cameron, Jason, Katelyn, Camilla and Skylar) then finally collected enough evidence from the road where Ian was killed to incriminate their laboratory chief Sophia Kaylock for the murder.

Cameron and the player then confronted Sophia about the murder, the consultant turned detective asking her why she would do this to her father and betray the law. Sophia initially denied the accusations against her, telling her teammates that they were wrong and that she wasn’t the killer. However when Cameron mentioned Seamus, Sophia then told Cameron to stop trying to push her. She then confessed straight away that she was Ian’s killer and that he deserved it. She then told them that her father appreciated his son and his achievements over his daughter, despite both of them being powerful aspects to the police department. She then told them that she was insufferably jealous of her twin brother for a long time, but she couldn’t hurt her brother. She then told them that she had lied to the Division for so long, telling them that she was allied with ENIGMA, under the aliases of the Sinner’s Hunter. She then confessed that she had made their former Chief Shawn Wakefield murder Mayor Dave Whiston and Josiah Matias murder Eli Monaco using psychology. She also confessed to being behind several deaths throughout the season via psychological persuasion, helping erase the existence of sinners from Evergrace. She then told them that ENIGMA would help her legacy and change Evergrace for the better. Soon after, Inspector Cortez and Isabel Lannuzzi came into the room to arrest the team for criminal involvement.

After the Inspector and Isabel arrested the team and put them in the holding cells of their own police department, Chief Sinnett and Cameron then saw someone who was familiar to Cameron, Jay’s political assistant Kevin McLachlan. Cameron then pleaded to his brother to pull strings so they could convince the Mayor. Kevin then agreed as he then took the player and Chief Sinnett to the mayor’s office, where Jay then listened to their claims of the Resistance’s betrayal and the team’s innocence with their lab chief Sophia uncovered as an insurgent assassin. Jay then told the detectives that they had six hours to prove Sophia’s allegiance to ENIGMA and that she was the only one on the team allied with the criminal organization. The Chief then went with the player to investigate the Kaylock twins’ laboratory, soon finding a locked diary belonging to Sophia. They then unlocked it and sent it to Skylar in the cells to analyze. The archivist then confirmed that she found evidence that Sophia was aware of a safe concealed in the Kaylock household’s living room that the others did not know of. They then questioned Ariel about the safe and she confessed that ever since she got home, she noticed her daughter looking at a specific place in the wall, almost like she was guarding it.

They then investigated the alcove in the living room that Ariel mentioned and discovered a keypad and revealed the fingerprints on the keypad, on the numbers 1, 8 and 6. Felix then deduced that the code was Sophia and Seamus’s birthdate, November 18, 1861, before the player was able to unlock the safe with Felix’s suggestion. They then sent it to Skylar and Seamus, who both were able to prove Sophia's double identity and betrayal to the team, as well her involvement in several deaths and the tampering of evidence. The Chief then told the player that they had to show the evidence to the Mayor, soon showing the proof. The Mayor then told them that he could trust them, and that in order for them to gain his full trust, they had forty eight hours to uncover the Resistance's betrayal to him and the law. The relieved Chief then thanked Mayor Monaco for the leniency and left to watch Sophia's sentence, where she was sentenced to life in solitary confinement by Judge Umbright. Afterwards, the player and Katelyn checked up on Seamus, who told them that he couldn't believe his twin sister's betrayal, but he would not let his sister manipulate him anymore as he promised to tak her place as lab chief while remaining as the team's inventor, telling his teammates that ENIGMA needed to be, and will be stopped. Chief Sinnett then came, agreeing with Seamus, as he then reminded them that even if they were innocent, they had forty eight hours to expose the Resistance's dastardly schemes.
