Burned at the Stake is a case featured in Criminal Case, appearing as the forty-sixth case of the game. It is the forty-seventh case set in the city of Crimsonden and also the first one one to take place in the River Banks district.

Plot

The team, after the discovery of Corinne Holloway as the traitor, decided to relocate to the district of River Banks, a wooden district to look for the criminals amongst the woods. The chief, Eleanor Carpenter, sent Allison and the player into the forests. The duo talked about the recent happenings, before, the team found a body tied to the stake in the middle of the forest, burned. Allison identified the victim as waitress Kate Ash, who the team suspected in the lawyer's murder. The team also had to suspect family patriarch Arthur Swift, who said that he was still mad over his daughter joining the police force, to which Allison told him to accept it already. The duo also suspected Layla Howe, a local drug addict, who said Kate was her friend, and she was sad at losing her. The team also searched the woodlands lake, to suspect writer Jaxon Adams, who said that he had tried to get inspiration for a novel. The team also learned that the killer knows horror movies from Joel, who said that the murder wounds were close to those from a horror movie. The team also found from Sybil, that the killer ate candy, before learning that their police informant had found something.

The team searched the victim's flat, which Vicky Carson had given them to the key to, before suspecting Vicky herself in Kate's murder. The team also suspected reporter Brantley Homewood in the murder, who lived with the victim to save rent, and said that the victim always paid rent on time. The team also found a threat addressed to the victim, which revealed that the killer watched telenovas, and the team also found out that Layla had borrowed money for drugs from Kate, but never returned it, and Kate slapped her for that. The team also found out that Kate used to be Arthur's personal assistant, before she was fired during a financial crisis, before learning that the victim's room had been vandalized.

The team rushed to the victim's room, where they found Brantley trying to calm down a Layla high on drugs. The team arrested Layla for vandalism, before interrogated Brantley. Brantley confessed that he had entered a sexual relationship with the victim, but it wasn't romantic at all. the team also found out that Vicky had hired the victim to serve at various important events, and keep her ears open for any news in those events. The team also found out that the victim had met Jaxon at a fan convention, a few years back. After finding all the evidence, the team arrested Layla Howe for the murder of Kate Ash.

Layla denied the accusations saying that she would not murder her friend in such a way. Allison pushed on saying, before Layla snapped saying that Kate was not a true friend, and that she was a witch. She continued saying that Kate had got her hooked on drugs in the first place, and was an addict once as well. Layla then cried and said that she was done with the friend of hers, before Allison told her to continue. Layla continued saying that Kate tried to force her to go to rehab, after Kate herself got clear, but Layla refused. She said that she had gotten into a feud with some drug dealers, and owed them money. Layla begged Kate for money, but Kate refused. Layla got mad, and tied Kate to a pole, before burning her and robbing her to pay the drug dealers off. Judge Clarke-Strickland mentioned that she could have gone to rehab as Kate suggested, but she made her own bed and refused to sleep in it, before sentencing her to 30 years in prison.

The team then went back to the station, where Allison breathed a sigh of relief, before telling the player that she had gotten a call from Arthur Swift earlier. The team sat down, before Allison played the message that went to voice message. The message said for Sybil to reconsider her decision about joining the team, saying that there was danger in the city, and that Sybil being in the police station, while pregnant could get her in danger. Listening to the desperate voice on the message, Sybil said that something was bothering her father. The team found a bouqet of flowers on one of the graves in the forest, and Sybil mentioned that it was her mother's grave. The team collected some wildflowers, and gave them to Arthur, before telling him to explain why he was so worried. Arthur said that it was nothing, and that Sybil needed to be protected, before Sybil took a stand against her overcontrolling father saying that she wanted to make a difference in the world, and not be a spoiled heiress in a castle, before saying that his secrets were going to get him killed.

James and Christina then arrived at the station, saying that James was buying the victim's flat to rent it to somebody else. James then said that he had found that the flat had been broken into. The team searched the broken flat, to find a small box in the end of the room. Joel cracked the cypher, slowly gaining his happiness back, and then told the team this was a clue to the player who was playing the city on their fingers, saying that they had found that the player had manipulated Corinne Holloway into betraying the team. Allison wondered about the motivations of this person, before saying that Corinne could be a valuable ally, if she was convinced.

Malcolm and Eleanor shouted no at the idea of even allying with Corinne but the rest of the team, said that Corinne had the same goal as them all along, bring down Nicholas Kirkland and the conspiracy. The team then discussed how Corinne could be used to arrest Christian Byrne and The Baron. The team reluctantly went to the lake, where they found Corinne's burner phone number carved onto a log. The team sent Corinne a message after Rosalyn, hoping for the best, and Malcolm looked on angrily at the team, saying that he had loved Jean like a son, and she shot his sister. The chief reluctantly disagreed with Malcolm, before Elijah ran in, saying that Corinne had given them a location to a bunker.
