Bound by Secrets is a case featured in Criminal Case as the fifth case of Boyland and the fifth case featured in the Boreu Bend district of Menodora.

Plot[]

The player had traveled with their partner towards their new crime scene based on Zachary’s finding, and Bryce commented on how exhausted he was on all the deaths that had been popping up as of recent this summer and the amount of paperwork this would all bring, Bryce then grunted and fumed, exclaiming that Andrew had always been the one getting out of doing all the dirty and tough work, and made a remark of how irresponsible the detective actually was when it came to professionalism and stuff to do with work, and Bryce sighed as he pulled up in front of the public pool area. After stepping out of the police cruiser, he took note of how the pool was supposed to be closed during the weekend and wondered how someone had died in the pool. He cleared the scene and took a step into the area inside, where he saw the body of a woman in a nurse’s outfit, floating facedown in the pool with her arms to the side, one crooked upwards, and one of her knees raised. Bryce grimaced and pulled her body closer to them, where he attempted to turn her on her back, and it’s there that he saw the way her eyes rolled back to her skull and the sickening expression on her face. The detective noted the puncture mark on her neck and exclaimed that this was no accident, it was murder, and that she was injected with something that caused her to have a deadly seizure. He was also able to see the badge on the victim’s chest, stating that her name was Tabitha Norwood.

He asked what the player had turned up with, and their investigation had revealed a medical bracelet and a syringe. Bryce assumed that the syringe was the murder weapon, but wanted to be sure, and took a closer look at it. They had found a substance on the tip of the syringe, which they had sent off for analysis, as they then looked at the medical bracelet. Bryce and the player ran the I.D. number through the database, where it was revealed that the medical bracelet belonged to a former patient of the hospital institution, who proved to be none other than Austin Norris. Bryce sighed at the realization that he would have to deal with Austin again, before tracking him down and interrogating him about the victim. Austin clutched his stuffed cat and let the tears fall as he knew he should’ve stayed with Tabitha and that she was foolish to not listen to him back when he warned her. Bryce was oblivious to Austin’s previous mention of Tabitha but asked him if he knew of anyone who wanted to hurt her. He shook his head quickly and looked scared to speak, mentioning something about bad men, before saying that he had visited Tabitha a lot in the nurse’s lounge at the institution she worked at. Bryce thought to himself and sneaked away as Austin was seen talking to himself- or his stuffed animal rather -and looked at the player awkwardly, suggesting they search the nurse’s lounge.

Once they arrived at the Nurse’s lounge, they had a look around and found a faded letter slipped into the bars of Tabitha’s locker and a bottle cap that was inside there as well. The detectives took a look at the bottle cap, and it revealed a set of fingerprints that they had analyzed. It belonged to a certain Xavier Robinson much to their surprise, where they found him lurking around the institution, a drunken mess. He raised his bottle as a toast for the detectives and asked them if they had seen Tabitha around anywhere before he frowned as he was told that she had been murdered. Xavier burped and shrugged, saying that it was disappointing to hear since Tabitha was the only one to hear him go on about his thousands of drunken tales and was the only person who could help him with his addiction before he asked to be left alone. Bryce sighed and told Xavier that there were resources available to aid him with his drinking problem, but the junkie ultimately left.

The duo afterwards examined the letter found in the victim’s locker and were able to reveal the text to be one appreciative of the victim, thanking her for her help. They sent it to Anthony to analyze, where he sipped his coffee thoughtfully and looked at the letter carefully, exclaiming that due to the handwriting, the killer must've been over 50 years old and female, and due to the improperness shown in the handwriting, this must’ve belonged to a person who was in a struggling situation. Bryce thought to himself and shrugged, as the profiler sighed and shook his head, saying that the only one that he thought it would’ve made sense to belong to was Myra Miller, the homeless woman the player and Bryce interrogated in their first investigation together. The detective blushed out of being embarrassed, and thanked Anthony for his help before going to find the homeless woman, who seemed shocked at the news of the nurse’s death. Myra sighed and admitted that Tabitha had helped Myra get treated from a bad illness before, ones the hospital wouldn’t treat her for due to her lack of money or insurance. She felt the loss of Tabitha deeply and said that she was an amazing young woman who had a kind soul and had good things going for her before she told them that she hoped they’d uncover this cruel killer.

After taking care of questioning their suspects, the pair reviewed their analyses they still had to check off. The lab chief had just finished with analyzing the substance and clapped his hands, winking at the detectives as they walked into his lab. He enthusiastically said that whatever was in the syringe, it was surely what had been injected into the victim, so they had found their murder weapon. He cheered that he found small particles of hand sanitizer in the drug as well, so given that the killer had been the one to touch the syringe, they must have been the ones using hand sanitizer. Bryce nodded gratefully and moved on, as Griffin put a finger on his chin and pressed a finger against the victim’s neck, feeling the puncture wound. The coroner explained that based on his findings, he was able to determine that Tabita was injected with phencyclidine, a deadly dose at that. Her killer had watched her enter a seizured state and twitch until she fell into the water, where she was unable to do anything but jerk and spasm until death overtook her. Along with that information, Griffin discovered that there were traces of cat hair on the victim’s clothes, and since the victim had clearly just been coming home from work, the strands of cat hair can only have come from when she made contact with her killer.

Right as they finished, Bryce received a text message from his phone, and when he checked it, he showed the player in a shocked manner that the sender had been texting from Tabitha’s phone, as shown by the number I.D. that popped up on the screen.

Bryce opened the message, and it showed the victim dealing something to the junkie they had just interrogated. Bryce scratched his head and wondered who could’ve sent him this, and if it was just another one of Tørrentt’s attempts to help, before deciding that they should speak to Xavier again. They had found him near the outside of the hospital, downing what seems to be another bottle of alcohol. The senior detective had inquired on what was going on in the picture to which the junkie responded with a shrug, saying that Tabitha had only given him medication to help cure Xavier’s cat. Bryce raised an eyebrow and wondered if he really had a cat as Xavier answered that as a stray and put fingers in his mouth and whistled, a dark cat crawling from the alleyway and nuzzling against the junkie’s leg. Xavier also admitted that he had seen Tabitha only a day prior to her murder (precisesly at 2AM) and mentioned something about going a place she needed to while looking worried. Bryce asked if he remembered where, to which he shook his head, but flashed a coupon in their face, saying it was what the victim had dropped before she left. The detective thought to himself and thanked him, taking the coupon and helping the player examine it, the coupon revealing a new place for them to investigate.

Once arriving at the pharmacy now that they know the victim had spent some of her final moments here, they began to look around, where they had found a torn document along with a faded one. The detectives tackled these issues, where they were able to discover a new suspect by the name of Rena Suzuki (who was working around the time that the victim had claimed she would go to the pharmacy) and that the killer takes Nevrax. They interrogated Rena and asked her if she had seen anything or remembered the victim, and the pharmacist whipped her hair back and looked at her nails, shrugging and stating that she didn’t keep track of who came in the previous night, as she was worried for her cat, who she claimed was sick. Bryce then asked her if she had known Xavier as she recoiled in disgust, exclaiming she had an encounter with the junkie before and even sanitized before interacting with him. While she continued to express her revulsion and uncomfortableness around him, Bryce awkwardly smiled at her and showed gratitude for her being as co-operative as she was and left.

Bryce then suggested that he and the player check out the crime scene one more time, where they had found enough evidence to suspect an athlete by the name of Stacy Powell and something to warrant another talk with Myra. They first spoke to the athlete, who gave the detectives a wink and asked if she was in trouble. Bryce shook his head but flashed her the Nevrax bottle they had found on the scene, and Stacy clapped her hands in delight and took it from Bryce, thanking him for finding her antidepressants as she had been looking everywhere for them and blowing him a kiss. Bryce blushed and proceeded to question her about the deceased nurse, where Stacy applied hand sanitizer on herself and hummed, telling them that she had no idea about the murder. She explained that the day before, she had reserved the pool for an event and came to check out the lot, though left rather quickly as she had other matters to attend to, which was what she unfortunately had to do now. She bid farewell until later and had left Bryce flustered as the pair then continued with their investigation.

They later approached the homeless woman, who had been stroking the fur of the cat Xavier previously had. Bryce had wondered about the cat, and the old woman smiled as the cat purred in her grip, saying the cat’s name was Luna and she was stray who the others in the neighborhood of Boreu Bend had been looking out for. The detective commended them for their kindness but went straight to the point and asked Myra about why her tabasco ash was on the crime scene around the time of the murder, as she put a hand over her mouth and shook her head. Myra sighed and explained that she had been sleeping in the pool area late at night, as she didn’t feel safe in the alleyway due to the previous investigation that took place there. Bryce looked skeptical and then asked her to expand upon her relationship with Tabitha, and Myra admitted that Tabitha had been giving the homeless woman prescription drugs without cost, such as Nevrax, and Myra appreciated the young nurse for her kind actions. She then exclaimed that she truly didn’t know what happened to Tabitha the night of her murder, as once she heard people approaching the pool area, she had left quickly.

The duo of detectives went over their evidence at the station, and Bryce put a hand on his neck and flashed a flustered smile, saying he really hopes the athlete isn’t the killer, as he couldn’t imagine a pretty face committing such a heinous act. When he finished speaking his mind, however, Zachary had entered the station, nervously scratching his head and letting out that Austin had been causing chaos on a crime scene...

The pair had gone to where Austin had been creating trouble, as it turned out to be the Nurse’s Lounge. Bryce had found the former patient frantically tearing the place apart, seemingly to be in search of something. Bryce stopped Austin and scolded him from damaging the crime scene further, and demanded him to say what was the meaning of his destruction. Austin only grabbed his hair in panic and talked to himself, Bryce obviously annoyed by everything Austin had been putting them through throughout all of the times he had been a suspect. The former patient bit his nails and explained that he was looking for one of Tabitha’s belongings and his prescription for Nevrax (which made him feel better and less paranoid), and continued to create a mess. Bryce grabbed him by the shirt out of annoyance and asked where Cassie had been given she was usually the one who watched over him, and Austin had said that she was out of town taking care of business with her inheritance and planning a funeral for Justin. Bryce then huffed and motioned him out of the crime scene, making it clear that he didn’t want to see him back again or he’d arrest him for tampering with evidence. The detective then sighed and ran a hand through his hair, saying it’d be worth taking another look through the scene to see if there was something Austin may have turned over in his mass destruction.

Shortly after, they had found enough evidence to warrant the interrogations of three more of their suspects, starting with Rena, who was discovered to have actually visited the nurse in the lounge only hours before her death. They confronted the pharmacist and she twirled her hair and blew a piece of gum, saying that while she did visit Tabitha, she hadn’t realized who had been walking into the pharmacy the night before, as her mind was on other matters as she previously stated before. She afterward states on how she didn’t even pay attention to how many Nevrax bottles she ordered for herself nor what she had for breakfast, and she couldn’t help them further past that.

They later interrogated the junkie, as it was found that Xavier had been caught breaking into the nurse’s archives. Xavier had grown on edge when confronted and quickly admitted to the truth, but promised that he wouldn’t do it again. He had explained that he only broke into the archives to get medication for himself, such as Nevrax and hand sanitizer, but Tabitha had caught him as he was doing so. He sighed, shedding light on the fact that Tabitha had let him go off and promised not to speak a word or press charges, understanding that Xavier had been battling his own issues. Bryce raised an eyebrow and told him that while he wouldn’t arrest him, he better get himself help.

Bryce and the player then questioned Stacy, who was revealed to have lied about not knowing the victim. Bryce gave Stacy a flashy smile while questioning her about lying as the athlete sighed, clarifying that she didn’t technically know the victim that well, but had a few scheduled appointments with her. She had been going through a rough patch in her life and had heard of Tabitha’s services a couple of months prior and had reserved private meetings with the young nurse, and was happy to see how much her mental health had improved with Tabitha’s advice. She even encouraged the athlete to get a pet of her own, prompting Stacy to get herself a ragdoll kitten. Stacy then took a sip of her water bottle and said that she would be going for an afternoon run, but winked specifically at Bryce to tease him and left afterwards. With a blush, Bryce chuckled and told the player that with all the interrogations out of the way, he had an idea of what they had to do next.

Finally, the detectives gathered all of their evidence to arrest Tabitha’s killer, who was discovered to be pharmacist Rena Suzuki.

They confronted the pharmacist who denied all the accusations against her, blowing on a wad of gum and leaning against the wall. She tries to get them off her back by stating that she had better things to do than to resort to something as exhausting as murder. Her cool and unbothered posture soon faltered however the more Bryce presented the evidence to her, and for the first time, she looked nervous. Bryce pressed further and further until the pharmacist cracked, admitting to the murder. She admitted that she didn’t like Tabitha, as she and Tabitha had been rivals since their high school days. It ended with the nurse stooping as low as to steal Rena’s boyfriend, who she loved very much. Rena then confessed that the two had also gone to the same university as they were going for the same major, but Rena was forced to drop out once she and Tabitha had been caught in a fight, and the pharmacist took most of the collateral damage. She had been working at the pharmacy until she got back on her feet and hated her job there, but had no other choice as her college record was ruined and she had no one else her life. While she resented Tabitha, she tried to plead that she would never resort to murder. She explained that she didn’t know what came over her, as one moment she was checking a customer’s order out and the next she was injecting something into Tabitha’s neck. In a panic, she assumed that she may have taken one too many pills of Nevrax which caused her mind to spiral and do something she didn’t mean to, and she afterwards begged them to believe her. Bryce sighed and said that while he felt for her, he had to uphold the law like he pledged an oath to and took a step forward to arrest her. In a moment, however, her eyes seemed to flash, and she suddenly grabbed a nearby bottle and slammed it against Bryce’s head. The senior detective winced and put a hand on what he claimed to be his perfect hair, pulling his hand back to reveal a small amount of blood. Rena then took something else in her hand and threw it at them, her eyes crazy as she screamed at them to stay away from her. Bryce had dodged them to the best of his ability though scraped in the process and called for backup, as they were soon able to successfully detain and arrest Rena. At trial, Judge Davis reviewed the information and looked at the defendant, who still struggled in the grip of officers by her side. Grayson stared at her longingly and asked her questions, but she only stared angrily at everyone around her. Grayson had come to a decision and expressed his shame towards the pharmacist for attacking a police officer and sentenced her to 30 years in the Mendorian Psychiatric Hospital, and a crazed Rena was taken away one final time.

As the trial ended, Bryce looked disappointed and rubbed at his bandaged head, saying that he didn’t know what came over Rena when they went to arrest her. It seemed like she was genuinely sorry for what she did, and he could tell she wasn’t as bad as she seemed, but something inside of her must’ve snapped. As he was walking away however, a tall figure stood in front of them, and Austin tried to ask for their help. Bryce rolled his eyes and asked what he wanted, the former patient shoving the stuffed cat in front of Bryce’s face and saying that the toy had evil inside of it, begging the cops to cleanse it. Austin then went on to speak of evil spirits lurking the town, and Bryce, as he curled his hands into fists, snapped and yelled at him for always interfering with police investigations. Bryce said that he never wanted to see Austin messing with them again or being delusional, or he’d actually arrest him the next time he were to mess up. As the former patient frowned, Bryce looked towards the player and walked away with them, leaving him alone.

A few weeks later, Bryce and the player had returned to the station as they saw an angry Cassie Taylor leaving the front doors. Bryce scratched his head in confusion and entered, and he suddenly mentioned something of a bad smell, asking if the player had smelled it too.Chief Freeman then approached them with a tense look, wishing to speak with the duo. They had spoken with him and discovered how uncomfortable Chief Freeman was with everything that has happened over the past few months. Leonardo expressed his worry for what was to come, and asked the player and Bryce to check out the nurse’s lounge once more to make sure there wasn’t anything that they may have missed or that Austin hadn’t been causing trouble again. Bryce nodded and investigated the nurse’s lounge, where they had found a beeping smartwatch, which was discovered to belong to engineering student Christian Salazar. They had tracked down the college student and approached him, asking him what his watch was doing on a crime scene. He nervously blushed and explained that he had visited the nurse’s lounge the previous week, but as clumsy as he knows himself to be, he lost his watch, and speaking of clumsy, he had also lost something else that was important to him, and it would require the detectives’ assistance. Bryce asked him what he meant by that, and he admitted embarrassedly that he had forgotten his textbook the last time he went to the pool, but didn’t want to trespass as it was taped off. He explained that he really needed it as he had important notes in said textbook and he was only in town for a couple of more days, and Bryce nodded, promising him he’d find the book.

After an extensive search of the pool, they had found Christian’s textbooks by the chairs, but the pages were torn, which Bryce suggested he and the player fix up. After doing so, they discovered a note on the pages that Christian had written, asking out and expressing his love for someone by the name of Jordan. Bryce thought to himself and wondered if this Jordan referred to the male entertainer the team had helped out a few weeks ago, who mentioned that he was in town with his best friend for the same duration Christian seemed to have been staying. He figured it’d be best to ask him himself though instead of speculating and went back to the college student, giving him his belongings. Bryce then asked him about Jordan, where Christian’s face turned beet red and confirmed Bryce’s suspicions about his crush and the male entertainer knowing him. Christian played with his hair and said that Jordan and him had been friends since before they could walk, and Christian had always loved him, but was too afraid to ever tell him. Bryce looked at him with a smirk and gave him some advice on winning over someone’s heart, and Christian afterwards thanked him and left.

After returning to the station, they had found Andrew stumbling on the doorway, holding a bottle in his hand and having bags under his eyes, a clear indication of him being drunk. Bryce sighed and rolled his eyes, moving to help him. Bryce sneaked him from the entrance to his office and sat him down, saying that he didn’t need to see Andrew get scolded for coming to work drunk once more. Andrew then attempted to get up, wanting to go off to find something, where Bryce offered to help him find it instead. The drunken detective explained that he had lost his lucky bottle cap and always had it with him, and the last place he remembered he had it was the pharmacy. Bryce nodded and asked for the player’s assistance, where they were finally able to find the bottle cap and give it back to Andrew. Andrew grumbled a thank you where Bryce did his own scolding, giving him a glass of water and telling him to stay put while they updated the chief.

Many hours later, once the sky turned dark and the other members of the MPD had left... Bryce, Andrew, and the player were in the bullpen, Andrew barely sober and Bryce finishing the last of his paperwork. Bryce pinched his nose and complained once again of a smell that bothered him and turned to both other detectives, asking if they had smelled it as well. Andrew gave a half shrug and continued with his own load, when the sound of a cat’s meow was heard as the cat previously seen with Xavier and Myra had scratched at the front glass doors. The three detectives stood up and looked at the cat curiously, who began running off and meow-ing, Bryce saying he thinks Luna wants them to follow her. Luna had jumped and rushed towards the back of the station, where the smell seemed to intensify, making the trio notice it. The cat as dark as the night began to paw at the ground and Andrew and Bryce looked at each other with a nervous expression. Andrew had left and returned with a few shovels a couple of moments after, handing one to Bryce and the player. Bryce had gulped and started to dig away at the ground, where his blood went cold as he felt himself hit something. The detective took one last look at Andrew and the player, before looking at the ground and continuing, and the dirt made way to reveal a familiar face, buried underneath the soil…
