Blown Wide Open is the twelfth case of Criminal Case as the twelfth case of the series. It takes place in Andromeda Avenue as the second case of the district.
Plot
After learning that Lua's mother, CHANCE CEO Lunata Godfrey, gave Baileys' father Dominick an explosive pin prototype, the elf joined Rachel and the player at the start of their next investigation. However, as they arrive at the mayoral office, an explosion suddenly goes off, the three getting knocked onto their behinds. Rachel rubbed her cat ears, sensitive to noise as Baileys pointed out her father coming out, smothered with ash and soot. He explained that he was okay, but his secretary is certainly dead. Baileys got his father to a hospital as Rachel and the player quickly rush in, discovering the body of secretary Courtney Moreau, her head blown wide off. Gala confirmed that the explosive pin prototype found last investigation matches the damage done to the poor woman's body. Remembering that the detonation was manual, the player knew that this wasn't an accident.
They find interrogated Dominick, who felt guilty, grimly commenting to Courtney that the pin was a hair pin she could wear on her head. They also suspected Judge Carter's daughter, courthouse clerk Elsinore Carter, after learning that her and the victim were always in the same room at times, Courtney requiring files analyzed by Elsinore. They also susepct engineer Meghan Turing, who was impressed about the nekomimi being able to walk after that big explosion. After Rachel complained that her cat ears are still ringing, a man with a CHANCE name tag on his chest approached, asking if his invention worked.
The mad scientist in question was blueprinter Brandon Worth, who offered a considerable sum of money for the mayor to test out the invention. Rachel called Worth made, saying that it killed somebody. Brandon shrugged and said that he gave them the non-lethal prototype, so why it killed someone was shocking. They investigate CHANCE's workshop and suspected tech guru Axis Wheeler after the victim came over to inspect the workshop with his jurisdiction. After learning that Elsinore and the victim were hiding a relationship from the public, Rachel and the player learn via surveillance footage that Meghan was the one who gave the mayor the murder weapon.
They question Meghan, and she denies knowing that it was the lethal prototype. She confesses that she only wanted to prank the mayor, saying that the pin was only supposed to emanate smoke to make the mayor and anyone else inside the room cough. After letting Meghan go, they discover that Axis wanted to kill the victim because of her harsh inspection of the workshop before ultimately incriminating Brandon for the murder.
Rachel and the player catch Brandon working on a new project before confronting him about the murder. The blueprinter was shocked and said that he didn't actually test it on someone, despite his excitement from his first interrogation. However, the nekomimi saw through his lies and pressured the evidence, causing him to confess, saying that he loved Courtney so. He explains that they started dating a couple days ago, the secretary admiring Brandon's intelligence. After discovering that CHANCE wanted to use nanotechnology for immortality, he gracefully asked Courtney if he could use her body for scientific purposes. The secretary pushed him away, saying that was weird. Angry, he sabotaged the pin prototype with enough nitroglycerin and gave it to Meghan to deliver to her, saying that it was a gift from a secret admirer. Waiting a few hours, he stalked her and saw Courtney wearing the pin in her precious brown hair, and when she sat down at her desk, he maliciously blew her head straight off. Judge Carter was disgusted by the blueprinter's desires and sentenced him to the psychiatric facility in Weeping Woodlands.
After the trial, a familiar voice rang Rachel, saying that she needs their help.
