—Case Teaser

Beyond the Veil is a case featured in Criminal Case, it appears as the thirtieth case in A World Forgotten and the two hundred and nineteenth overall. It takes place as the sixth and final case in the Mystveil district of Ravenedge.

Plot

Following the horrifying murder of Sylvester Wilde in the police's own interrogation room, they learned one of the Blackwood's involvement with the series of attacks across Mystveil. With no time to waste, they rushed to the Blackwood manor in the dead of night, the fog rolling in thick. They approached the black gates, before noticing a flock of ravens feeding on a body in the Blackwood hunting grounds. With only a candle, Sienna and the player entered the hunting grounds, only for Sienna to go pale at what she saw... paranormal expert Lyra Payne suspended between two trees, multiple gunshots in her body, before her ribcage was pulled open to reveal her insides. After a worried Moira conducted the autopsy, confirming Lyra suffered a painful death, they returned to the manor, only to suspect Countess Allura Blackwood, Count Victor Blackwood, gothic girl Antoinette Blackwood, and family patriarch Hercule Blackwood. Later, with no sign of Draco who had fled into the night, the team began to panic. Cornelius then told them he ran Lyra's fingerprints to check for any priors, only to discover the truth: Lyra was a lost Blackwood heir.

They then spoke to a shaken Victor, who admitted he loved his sister, despite not seeing her for years. When asked what happened, Victor revealed Lyra didn't follow "the Blackwood way" and was cut off from the family. They also suspected Wilhelmina Blackwood and eventually, found a panicked Draco in the ballroom, insisting he couldn't handle the lies anymore. As the fog continued to roll in and the team swore they saw figures in the dark, Sienna and the player recapped in the courtyard. Suddenly, the estate went quiet, before a gunshot broke the silence - crimson blood splattering against the ballroom window.

They hurried through the hallway and into the ballroom, finding Allura crying over the dead body of her husband, Victor. There, they found a bullet wound in the side of his head, blood pooling on the floor. Due to not finding a suicide note on the scene, they labelled the suicide as suspicious. Later, they it was Wilhelmina who kicked Lyra from the family, that Hercule had been meeting his daughter on the quiet, and that Lyra continued to pester the family and Allura about Lady Nightshade. This interested Antoinette, who decided to ally herself with Lyra. They also found Draco having a panic attack in the greenhouse, unable to cope with his father's death. Finally, as the night darkened, the truth was revealed... the evidence pointing to Allura as the killer. Suddenly, Hope hurried in, revealing she'd done her own investigation and the evidence led to Wilhelmina. Then, Charity insisted that couldn't be right, as the evidence led to Victor. Before they could uncover the truth, they found a letter on a table waiting for them, inviting them to dinner at the Blackwood estate.

The team entered the ballroom, finding Wilhelmina, Allura, and Hercule sitting at a large table, enjoying one final dinner. Above them, Lady Nightshade's beautiful wedding dress was suspended. A tearful Draco then told them to reveal what was going on, prompting Hercule to confess Lady Nightshade wasn't a spirit, but a creation of the Blackwood family, made with prosthetics, lighting, acting, and an "extra push". Wilhelmina, with her past career as a stage actress, coached the family to make the ruse, with Allura revealing she dressed as Lady Nightshade for the first attacks. Using Ambrosine LaFleur's hallucinogenic mushrooms, which she used to kill Annamae Harwell, they poisoned each of the victims, so they'd be suggestable, before Tobias remembered every victim had been drinking before their attack, except for Sylvester, who was killed in the dark. When asked how they killed Reya Crowe, Hercule revealed he hid in her dark house, and during her hallucinations, shot her in the head. Allura, who was waiting outside, then began running in the wedding dress, to sell the illusion Lady Nightshade was responsible. They also Draco's security pass to kill Sylvester in the interrogation room.

Wilhelmina also revealed they arranged a séance to throw suspicion away from the family, with her dressing up as Lady Nightshade while Allura conducted the séance. The old lady then stood up, revealing she could walk. As the team looked on in disbelief, Lawrence asked how they removed Lady Nightshade's footprints, with Hercule admitting they wiped them away after, alongside Elysia Rosenthal's, admitting that was their biggest mistake. Wilhelmina then revealed they all killed Lyra together, after she put her nose where it didn't belong, before Victor couldn't handle the guilt, and shot himself in the head. A tearful Allura then took the note in which Victor revealed the truth, before going back to grieving. Draco and Antoinette were not involved, however, as they needed them to continue the family legacy. When asked why they went to such extreme lengths, Hercule told the team some secrets had to go the grave, before downing his wine, foaming at the mouth and dropping dead. Lawrence shot the other glasses, the team soon arresting Wilhelmina and Allura. In court, they refused to reveal their motives, telling them they'd die first. They were then sentenced to life in solitary confinement by Judge Haddid. Outside, Draco insisted he needed to be alone.

The team were determined to discover the truth behind the Lady Nightshade conspiracy and headed to the manor, eventually uncovering Lyra's notes. Per Hope, it was revealed Lyra had discovered the truth: Ophelia Blackwood didn't commit suicide in the woods, but was murdered by her brother. Hope went on to reveal the Blackwood family had a history of killing each other, siblings killing siblings, husbands killing wives, parents killing children. Draco then asked the team to let him confront his mother.

Draco then met his mother in her prison cell, where he tried to wipe his eyes. Allura, however, stayed silent. Draco began pleading with her more to tell him the truth, practically begging her. As he implored his mother to tell the truth, Allura agreed. She told them how an anonymous figure approached the family in Crown Plaza with proof of their crimes, telling them they'd expose the sordid truth unless they scared the Rose Movement into submitting, thus creating Lady Nightshade. She then explained how they had no chance, they'd lose everything, so the family agreed, but kept the children out of it. As Draco stood up to leave, Allura told him she loved and was proud of him, despite everything, and that he'd grown up to be "the man she was always knew he could be".

Elsewhere, Lawrence revealed a crowd of Rose supporters were outside City Hall, pelting it with rocks. The charge, led by Marianne Rose, argued with guards on the premises, as the team tried to stand between them. Marianne then demanded payback for the city murdering Reya and attacking her fellow supporters. Mayor Osborne soon told the guards stop the crowd by all means necessary. They began to fight, as both sides raised guns to shoot at the other. Amethyst rushed out in front of them, urging the two sides to stop the bloodshed, and that if they refused, they'd have to knock her down too. Eventually, after a tense stalemate, the sides departed. Marianne's son, Gabriel, applauded Amethyst, admitting he was smitten by her bravery.

Finally, Draco met with his sister, the only family he had left. Draco and Antoinette clung to each other, promising to never leave the other. As they realized they needed to bring justice to Ophelia, they found proof of Ophelia's murder and published it, destroying their reputation. Draco and Antoinette then changed their surnames to Payne, finally ending the Blackwood legacy. As the team regrouped, Charity told the team tensions were worsening and that it was only a matter of time before a meltdown. Knowing the figure who forced the Blackwood family into creating Lady Nightshade was in Crown Plaza, they headed there, unaware the danger they faced...

Elsewhere, in the feuding city, Sienna enters into a bar owned by the Rose Movement after they continue to endorse her petition. Marianne stands on a stage, talking to the crowd, telling them they need to rise up once and for all. As Sienna could only watch, members of the crowd pick up knives, bottles, anything they could find, and begin chanting "Ravenedge must do better!". They are prepared to fight for change, even to the death. The revolution has begun.
