A Thunder of Feathers is a case featured in Criminal Case as the one-hundred and eighty-third case of the game. It is the second case of Mystical Investigations and the second case in the Ghoulish Grove district of Maplemoor.
Plot[]
A couple days after the party following the player’s first case, Krystal and the player were walking along a path that bordered a forest when they suddenly heard a scream coming from the forest. After they investigated, they then discovered the body of hiker Brett Sudwurth, pecked to death. After sending the body to Ariella and Peony, they were able to conclude that he had been pecked to death by crows after the killer fed an elixir to the crows. With the revelation, they were able to suspect surgeon Finley Perish, before they suspected Destiny’s brother Tim Horton as well as Judge Blackmoon’s niece, artist Melanie Blackmoon who immediately revealed to them that she was a vampire. After Tobias Black helped the detectives discover the killer watched his favourite show, Zombie Homeland, they were recapping the case when Jack came in and told them that their victim had been seen at a cabin site an hour prior to his death.
After the detectives arrived at the cabin site, they were able to add cabin owner Charles Small and suspected witch Minerva Pierce to the suspect roster. They then discovered that Brett had attempted to murder Melanie in the past, but the artist had made him flee with a whip, a bucket of paint and showing off her fangs to frighten him. They also found out that the victim was responsible for bullying Tim in the past, making Destiny’s brother wage revenge on him at any cost. Soon after, as Krystal and the player mused over the case, the duo suddenly heard a series of noises coming their way before being surrounded and attacked by a murder of crows.
After a short while, the crows finally flew away from the duo after Krystal shot a round in the air. After Peony tended to the scrapes on their faces and hands from the crows, the detectives then discovered that Brett had tried to sue Finley for having done "illegal procedures and surgeries" despite the victim having no proof to back up the accusations. They then found out that Charles had threatened the victim after Brett had destroyed valuable items on the cabin owner’s property and that Minerva had put a spell on him after he made fun of her multiple times. After the investigators discovered enough evidence, the team was able to arrest Charles for the crime.
The detectives then confronted Small about the murder, but he initially denied everything, admitting to the crime upon after being asked if he actually did it for such simple objects. The cabin owner then snapped and told the duo that if Sudwurth wouldn’t have been so snooping, he wouldn’t have had to do this. When Krystal asked what he meant, he told them that Brett had discovered that Charles was getting money from selling illegal supernatural objects such as werewolves’ fangs, vampire blood and more. He went on to explain how he had gained a fortune like this until the victim started to get suspicious, soon investigating and discovering the truth when he caught Charles selling to one of his buyers. Knowing that he couldn’t let him escape, Small chased after him before knocking him out and tying him up to a tree. He then fed some crows an elixir which would cause them to become aggressive toward Brett. The killer then watched as the birds pecked the poor man alive until he screamed, prompting Charles to get out of there before anyone could arrive. Disgusted by the lack of heart, Krystal handcuffed him and brought him to trial where Judge Blackmoon sentenced the remorseless dealer to 60 years in jail without a chance of parole. Right after the detectives got back to the precinct, Chief Lucero told the duo that they had a problem concerning Tobias.
Nathan then told Diego and the player that he hadn’t been fully honest before the chief then explained that Tobias was a werewolf. With no time to explain, Nathan, Diego and the player hurried to the forest where they discovered Tobias’s necklace which had a strange substance on it. After the detectives were able to do a closer investigation, Cato revealed it was a mixture of paint and deer blood, prompting the duo to find Melanie and ask her about their werewolf friend. She explained that she had encountered him when he accidentally ran into her, with a scared expression on his face. The vampiress artist then told them that she had seen him heading toward the cabin site, where the detectives found the tech expert’s beanie. As they were about to check for any other clues, they suddenly came face to face with Tobias in his full werewolf form, growling and looking at them. Remembering his younger brother’s advice and tricks about how to tame animals, the elder Redmoon heir approached his old friend and gently calmed him enough, staying with him for the rest of the night. When morning arrived, Tobias and Diego arrived back at the station, where they asked him about how he was a werewolf. He explained that a year after leaving Rosenoque, while he was on the road of exploration, a werewolf had jumped in front of his car, causing him to crash. Without hesistation, the werewolf jumped on the struggling young man and started to maul him. As Tobias tried to fight back, an older man shot the monster dead and brought the injured Tobias in a RV where another woman started treating his wounds, informing the others that he would survive, despite being infected by the bites. He then explained that those two people that saved him were Ariella and Nathan who had been chasing the escaped werewolf for hours before the attack. Tobias then apologized to his friend, before Diego hugged him, saying that he wouldn't have to hide anymore.
Meanwhile Krystal and the player were informed by Tim of a murdered corpse found on the docks. The detectives then headed to the docks, where they found a decomposing corpse left on the docks, which made Krystal sick upon seeing it. They then sent the body to Ariella and Peony, the coroner duo revealing that the body was killed by the same virus that killed Eloise, meaning that the virus was most likely the killer's modus operandi. They then told them that they were able to identify the victim as Olive Putnam, a local escort, before they suggested to talk to Finley to see if he's seen anything about this kind of virus. They then questioned Finley, who told them that he had discovered years ago, a young child suffering from sickly side-effects of a virus, which included decaying flesh, heavy rashes and black boils forming on the skin. He then told them that legends of a plaguebearer foretold of a sickly plague they carried, and others told of a witch doctor who carried the plague, and that the plague they carried would kill anyone suffering from it. As well, the fumes would only make someone nauseous and slowly suffer from the plague, unless they inhaled certain herbal fumes to prevent the sickness. He then told them that if someone was killing with the use of a plague, it wasn't good for the city, if the virus could kill a supernatural creature as shown previously.
After all the events, Diego and Tobias were talking about the reveal of Tobias's secret, before Destiny were heard arguing with Jack about the supposed "Plaguebearer" being on the loose. Nathan and the player then asked Destiny and Jack what was going on, before the profiler told the Chief that he shouldn't have trusted the outsiders, as they could've brought the plague to the city to kill all of the people in it, like the plague killed Eloise. Destiny then stormed out of the office, and Nathan sighed, apologizing to Jack and the player, explaining that Destiny has always had a mistrusting exterior despite her skilled psychological prowess. He then said that it would take time for them to gain trust, as the team investigated the Plaguebearer, before the whole city was infected.
