A Cuckoo in the Clock is a case featured in Criminal Case as the one-hundred and eighty-fourth case of the game. It is the third case of Mystical Investigations and the third case in the Ghoulish Grove district of Maplemoor.

Plot[]

After the discovery of a serial killer being on the loose, Diego Redmoon came into the station to meet the player, telling him that he had gotten to talk to Tobias more now that they both knew of his werewolf form. Chief Lucero then told the detectives of a peculiar murder being discovered in Ghoulish Grove, prompting them to investigate. They investigated the Wickworth antique clock shop to find the corpse of famous clockmaker Thomas Wickworth, his body turned into a cuckoo clock. Ariella and Peony then revealed that the victim was gutted and turned into a clock literally from the mechanisms, the clock hands, the pendulums and even the cuckoo mechanism, a dead will-poor-will bird serving as the cuckoo bird. The detectives then investigated the murder, soon interrogating the victim's apprentice Ryan Izora before he revealed to the detectives that Thomas was the one who ran the construction of the clock tower in the district. There, they were able to find clues to suspect lighthouse owner Arnold Bates and the victim's sister, seamstress Emilia Wickworth, before Krystal revealed to the detectives that someone had started barking and growling at the birds in a bird shop.

The detectives then found a man barking at the birds in the bird shop, before Diego then asked him what he was doing. The man then stopped barking and bashfully admitted that he was a werewolf and that his wolflike side got better of him. After they questioned the werewolf Gerwulf Amoux about the murder, they then investigated the bird shop and discovered that a whip-poor-will had escaped the shop, prompting them to question bird breeder and shop owner Yasmine Hawthorne about the murder. They then found out that Ryan had been bullied by the victim whenever he made a mistake, and that Arnold and Thomas had been former friends. Soon after, they were informed by Kaitlyn that Gerwulf had been sighted in his werewolf form, with a dead crow in his mouth. After Diego and the player were able to calm down Gerwulf again before telling him off for attacking and killing a crow, the detectives then found out that Thomas had estranged his sister and threatened Yasmine with killing all the birds in her shop if they woke him up again. In the end, the killer's time would run out as Diego and the player found enough evidence to incriminate Emilia as the killer.

Emilia initially denied the accusations against her, before she cracked and confessed to the murder. She then told them that many years ago, her brother had insulted a young woman who was believed to be a creep due to her occult dealings. However, years after that day, the siblings' father died at the age of seventy-two, before their mother followed a few years later, at the same age. After the mystical power struck the city ten years prior, she then started seeing witches and warlocks alike, making her believe that they were coming for her next, as she was the eldest sibling. She then spoke to a witch a year ago, and the witch then told her that to lift the curse, she needed to kill her brother a week before her seventy second birthday. She then revealed that the witch gave her a gear that would allow her brother's corpse to work like a cuckoo clock, once he was dead and the clock assembled. She then told them that she attacked Thomas with the clock hands and gutted him of his insides like the witch told her to, before turning her brother's corpse into a clock. She then left the victim's insides in a chest and fled the scene, leaving Thomas's corpse working perfectly like a clock. Diego and the player then took Emilia to trial, where Judge Blackmoon sympathized with Emilia's fears, but told her murder was not the choice, before sentencing her to a institutional nursing home for the rest of her life. After the arrest, Diego told the player that they had to find their murderous plague doctor before it was too late.

The player and Diego then got informed by Yasmine of an incident in her bird shop. The bird breeder then told them that she felt sick and needed to lie down. Wearing gas masks on Chief Lucero's orders, Diego and the player then investigated the bird shop, where they found a series of dead birds in their cages throughout the shop. The detectives then decided to take a few birds to send to Ariella for examination. While Ariella expressed her sorrow for the dead birds, she then revealed that they suffered from a plague that caused them to suffer a heart attack and their bodies to develop black boils and decompose. She then told them that the plague was likely put in the shop through some kind of device, making the birds sick before they died from the exposure. However as Yasmine was in the shop for a few minutes, she only suffered from nausea. The detectives then checked on Yasmine, who told them that on her way to flee the shop, she kicked a strange canister into a pile of empty birdcages. Diego and the player then reinvestigated the bird shop, where they found a strange canister with equally strange symbols on it. After Peony was able to clean the canister of the virus, Kaitlyn revealed that the symbols were of a crown, a sword, an empty bowl and a skull, all representing the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. She then further explained that the final Horseman was Death, spreading a sickly plague to kill, meaning it could be connected as she revealed that history of Maplemoor revealed that the Four Horsemen were executed in the town of Paix after they were exposed, and that the Fourth could've gotten away. The detectives then informed Yasmine of what happened and told her to help warn the town.

Meanwhile, Destiny reluctantly confessed to Krystal and the player that she had feelings that she was being followed over the last few days. When Krystal asked her when thr last time was when she felt like she was being followed, Destiny then told them that she was strolling around the clock tower when she last felt it, prompting the detectives to investigate. Krystal and the player then found some torn pieces, revealing a message written to Destiny that detailed how she should've never tried to escape her past. When Krystal and the player then interrogated Destiny about what the message said, the profiler then sighed and confessed that when her family moved to Canada, she grew up with her brother and parents in the town of Paix, a local village in Ghoulish Grove. However when the mystical power around Maplemoor affected the whole city, four villagers of the town were transformed into the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. When famine, sickness and mistrust affected the town, the villagers worked together to find out who was the four horsemen, before executing them. She recalled how three of them were lynched on the gallows, and the fourth was shot dead by a vigilante, who happened to be her own father. She then told them that she and her brother were banished from the town after her father died, due to a heart attack, as they believed they were affiliated with the four horsemen they killed. When Krystal asked Destiny why they weren't lynched on the gallows, Destiny told them that she had been the one to diplomatically talk her way out of the execution to protect herself and her brother.

After all the events, Destiny and Kaitlyn revealed that the mass grave for the Horsemen was located on the outskirts of Paix, and that she could go out to the town to try to investigate the mass grave to find out more. After Tobias and the player were able to set up an emergency alarm and speaker, in case she got into trouble, Destiny then departed the station to face her past. After an hour, the alarm went off and Tobias turned on the speaker to talk to Destiny, only to hear the villagers of Paix shouting for the execution of Destiny Horton.
