A Candide Lie is a case featured in Criminal Case as the thirteenth case of the game. It is the first case set in the Butterfly Cove district of Shadowcrest.

Plot

Following the team's promotion to Butterfly Cove at Mayor Sperazzo's behest, the team wondered how they could uncover the identity of The Monarch, the figure who Sanjay Hopkins and John-Jack Russell were taking orders from. Now in Kristen's hometown, Chief Cromwell admitted to still being in the dark about why the mayor had promoted them here, but cheekily pointed out that she would likely relent once she saw all the calls he had sent to City Hall. The chief suggested that, while he waited for an official response, Kristen show the player around Butterfly Cove, given that she knew the lay of the land. She then gladly brought the player to a rather idyllic waterfront in the eastern part of the district, reminiscing her adolescence. Unfortunately, Kristen was unable to fully reacquaint herself with the tranquility, given the presence of a corpse floating in the water.

Kristen and the player were able to identify the dead body as that of philosophy professor Martin Pangloss, whose tongue had been hacked off. Sofia was able to ascertain that the victim's tongue had been removed posthumously, as he had been strangled to death. Following the autopsy, the team was able to flag various suspects in the murder investigation. One such suspect was French tourist Cunégonde Périgord, who viewed the victim in a high regard, as he had helped her navigate through the city. The duo also flagged the governor of the Buenos Aires province, Hernán d'Ibarra y Figueroa y Mascarenes y Lampourdos y Souza, who denied having met the victim but contrasted that by pointing out that he was amazed by how welcoming the city's denizens were to him. Additionally, the investigators suspected Kristen's childhood sweetheart, Arthur Min, who hugged her and was glad to see her back after all these years. Forthcoming with testimony as a show of respect, Arthur admitted that he had been one of Professor Pangloss' students in college. While he had thoroughly enjoyed his philosophy classes, Arthur admitted that he had been unnerved by the victim's inexorable sense of optimism but shrugged it off, citing that it was just a quirk. After interrogating the trio, Kristen and the player bumped into a doublet-clad Alex, who excitedly pointed out that he had seen the victim at the Renaissance Faire earlier that day.

Galvanized into investigating the festival as a crime scene, the detectives suspected gossip columnist Mandy Delgado, who wanted to interview the victim on his latest philosophical thesis analyzing wanderlust and its correlation with ennui and nostalgia. Kristen had also discovered that Arthur deeply resented the victim, prompting him to admit that the victim had a grudge against him for no reason and would have failed him had it not been for countless all-nighters. They had also discovered that the victim had broken Hernán's watch, and the governor shed his veneer of gratitude, admitting that the victim was xenophobic and made some rather uncomfortable statements. Hernán pointed out that while his death would not solve any problem on a macroscopic scale, he was glad to not have to deal with him anymore. Kristen and the player also identified elusive German billionaire Barron Thundertrunk as a suspect as he had planned on meeting the victim for drinks at the Cacambo Hotel. However, he took his interrogation as a personal affront and refused to answer the team's questions. After finding the curtain tie-back used to strangle Martin, Dean notified the player that Barron had taken such umbrage at being flagged as a suspect that he had filed a restraining order against the two detectives.

In light of this, Kristen admitted that while she deescalating arguments came as second nature to her, there was no use flogging a dead horse with trying to appease the wealthy land baron. As such, she politely requested Julian to call Barron and be as anodyne with him as possible: this ultimately proved successful, and he confessed that he had been interested in Martin's meditation about traveling and enervation. Despite having all the money he could imagine, Barron felt that no wordly possessions could bring him true joy anymore and was hoping that he obtain the victim's counseling. However, he was never able to meet Martin and begged Julian and the player to arrest his murderer. After the phone call, Kristen and the player discovered that the victim refused to meet up with Mandy despite her incessant pleas otherwise. She admitted that she was fed up of being viewed as being lesser of a writer due to her work in gossip, and was banking on having an in with Martin. However, he gave Mandy his brooch, suggesting a vocational change and that his gift would help her "pay the bills", offending the journalist who felt patronized. The investigators were then surprised to discover that Cunégonde was actually a high-class prostitute from France. After offering her services to the team — who politely declined — Cunégonde admitted that she had come to Shadowcrest in search of new clients. She sheepishly revealed that she had been somewhat enamored by the victim but didn't act on it, afraid of warding him off. After finding the axe used to mutilate Martin and the tongue itself, the team was able to flag the killer as...
