—Case Teaser |
A Bright Future is the thirteenth case of Criminal Case as the thirteenth case of the series. It takes place in Andromeda Avenue as the third case of the district.
Plot[]
After being asked by inventor Meghan Turing to investigate Lunata's rival company, Baileys and the player head to the virtual reality testing grounds to investigate the other outlook on immortality. However, as the player arrives there, a young woman runs towards the duo in tears, saying that her father has just been murdered. They follow the woman and find the body of tech critic Stewie Robbins, his eye area burnt to a crisp by a virtual reality headset. Hyde grimly commented that the victim was dead when he first put on the mask, showing that the headset was impossible to take off without scissors.
The duo first suspected the young woman in question, the victim's daughter Leslie Robbins, who was in tears seeing her dad collapse. They also suspected one of the headset mechanics on duty, Linus Martin, who was shocked that someone managed to pull such a stunt off, as well as previously suspected virtual reality manager James Hardwin, who was outraged by the murder on his grounds. During the investigation, Leslie approaches the player and Baileys and confesses that the victim frequented an aromatherapy clinic.
They investigate the aromatherapy clinic and were greeted by aromatherapist Nellie Caldwell, who was glad to have the player enter her domain. When asked about the tech critic, she says that he requested her numerous amounts of times because of the overwhelming stress he seemed to be through. When asked what about, she points over to the receptionist. They head over and are welcomed by Mika Marsh, Seattle's former judge, who said that she got a job here at the aromatherapy clinic. Mika points out that Stewie was under stress about the tech critic inspection, worried that he might damage his perfect vision. They discover that Leslie wanted to move out of the victim's house because of his demanding rules, but regret driving him away. While speaking to the player, Baileys gets in contact with James, saying that they are no longer allowed on the premises.
After asking why, James explains that they have been obstructing property and should not be allowed back on. However, Mika walked by and told him that he can't legally do that. After being proved right, James storms off as Baileys thanks the former judge. After discovering that Nellie was being womanized by the victim, the team found enough evidence to suspect Linus for the murder.
They force Martin to pause him working on a headset and confront him about the murder. Linus was disgusted that the player would think someone of his caliber would stoop down low. However, as the elf pressures the mechanic with the evidence, Linus snaps, saying that he's the best of the best. He then explains how his headsets are the best: comfortable, and less straining on the eyes than the average headset. After hearing and reading Stewie's critical review, he saw it as an insult and said that there was nothing wrong with his headsets. Angry that Stewie wants to "soil his reputation," he sabotaged the testing headset and gave it to him, flipping on a switch to start burning his eyes. Judge Carter was disgusted at the pretentious motive and sentenced Linus to life in prison.
After the trial, Chief Santana phones in and tells the player to find out the idea of getting a second chance in virtual reality. They attempt to speak to James to see about his invention, but he denies knowing anything: saying that Linus was self-centered and showed it off to the public himself. They head to Linus in his cell, and ask him about his invention. He shrugs and shoos them off, saying that they can read an article about it. The duo investigates the testing grounds and find an article about the invention by Aleksandr Volkov, an investigate journalist that was previously met in an earlier investigation. Baileys and the player ask Volkov about what he knows: and he explains that the mechanic has constructed a headset that has wires that are supposed to connect to vital parts of one's brain, and with unprecedented amounts of time, it updates its' memories into the headset. Then, hours before one's death, the soon-to-be deceased places the headset on and their memories flourish in virtual reality. They ask Volkov about his opinion about it, and he seemed conflicted, saying that while immortality is a strong idea, execution of said idea is awkward.
Baileys and the player were contacted by Aqua, saying that they have a lead on the other company, CHANCE, through her girlfriend. She explains that CHANCE is building a new store in a local supermall, and Black Friday is about to happen. They get confirmation from Myrtle, but says that they need a private pass to get early access to the store. They investigate Lunata's resting place, the aromatherapy clinic, and find a private pass addressed to Nellie. The player and the elf ask Nellie if they can use the pass, and she perfectly obliges, saying that she has work that day so she can't use it. After returning to Myrtle, she wishes them good luck and walks off with Aqua. With an interest for CHANCE, the team head to go Black Friday shopping.
